Series I guitar on ebay
« Reply #15 on: May 13, 2004, 08:41:33 PM »
Hi brothers,

The bidding on the NOS Series I guitar on ebay keeps going up. I'm currently the high bidder and, at $3000, the reserve still hasn't been met. Doesn't look too good, though I'm having a real problem letting this opportunity slip away. What are the chances of something like this EVER coming up again...27 years old, from back in the day...and untouched?

I feel like an archaeologist who stumbled upon a newly discovered tomb of the Pharoahs...what a treasure!

I say go for it ,series (guitars) are very rare instruments most of them are still locked in peoples closets, that one somehow escaped!,in my 25 yrs of playing ive never seen one on stage &  from what the seller is saying, this one has hardley been played & it apears so. it looks new to be 27 yrs old .

It's a very hard one to pass up.... If finances allowed, I'd buy it in a heartbeat! Again, good luck Jonathan!

My wife began asking very probing questions about this particular guitar and, after I told her what I would be willing to spend, she confessed that she had been bidding on it as a Father's Day present. Outbid by my own wife! I never told her about my initial bids, figuring she'd explode at the idea of my buying another guitar just months after getting the Orion and still waiting for my custom Alembic and Resurrection guitars to be finished. She never ceases to amaze me.

Anyway, she came clean and so did I. She e-mailed the seller and found out the reserve was $5000. I can't justify that kind of money on something sight unseen.

Hopefully it will find a good home...I know I have.

Sellers with $5K reserves can change their tunes when the bidding ends at $4200.  It was at $3900 last I looked, and if you're willing to go up a bit from there, you may not be out of the running yet.

Jonathan:  Your wife is very sweet.  I am fortunate that my wife would do the same.  You are very lucky.

So what happened?  Did you get it Doc?  Did anyone at the club happen to get it?  This was such a nice story, I have to know how it ended.

Jorge,

My wife and I both decided to let it go. The guitar wound up fetching $5000. Hard to say what it's really worth - likely not that much, purely from a production standpoint, but perhaps more from a uniqueness perspective. In the end, it was too much to spend on something sight unseen.
I'll probably regret it down the line, but...oh well.

Jonathan (and others who have followed this instrument...)

I am very new to the club and an over due introduction will follow shortly.

The Series I ended up in my hands... I just couldn't resist this unique timepiece - and the story about this treasure forgotten in a small shop in Canada...

I have just recently been introduced to the world of Alembic - and I am completely fascinated with the company, the people and their wonderfull creations as well as this whole Alembic-eco-system!!! (The Alembic Club is already my homepage...)

Jonathan, if you and your wonderful wife ever get to the San Francisco bay area - it would be my pleasure to let you try out the guitar! Just let me know!! (You could combine it with a visit to Santa Rosa!)

Christian,

Thanks for providing a sense of 'closure' to this little adventure. Having checked your bio, I can't begin to say how happy I am that the guitar ended up in the hands of someone with an obvious appreciation for what it is...and what it represents. My wife and I are planning a trip to the land of the fault lines in the near future. I would love to take you up on your generous offer. And, if you ever get tired of playing that beauty, I'll give you fifty bucks for her! LOL.

Play hard...play true. Hopefully our paths will cross at some point.

All the best,

Jonathan

Christian; welcome to the group.  Looks like you have a nice collection of Alembics.
