Jimmy Johnson Signature Deluxe 5 For Sale!
« on: September 14, 2004, 01:01:18 PM »
Hi All

My Jimmy Johnson Signature Deluxe 5 is up for grabs. Lots going on with me at the moment and this bass remains unused. It's too beautiful to be sitting around doing nothing and I'm too busy to play it, so I'm going to sell.

Please contact me at mik_walker@yahoo.com for full details and with any questions. There are some details available at http://club.alembic.com/index.php?topic=8770 also.

I am also selling a Curbow XT-33 fretted 6, a Jaydee Supernatural Series II fretted 4 and possibly a Turner Renaissance (with a tasty abalone/tortoise upgrade) RB5-FL fretless 5.

Thank you all kindly

Mik

Good luck with your sale, Mik.  I have loved your walnut top since I first saw, it.  Were I not already overcommited, I'd bid.  I suspect you'll have no trouble.

Bill,

Thanks for your kind words. It is a stunning pair of pieces of walnut without a doubt. Hopefully the bass will end up going to a home where it will be cherished and played! Thanks again, Mik

I have a question: is this an official Jimmy Johnson signature - official Alembic name, I mean?

Or is it just a configuration which matches the appearance of Jimmy's bass?

Hello effclef

May I recommend you check out the link I listed above for this bass?http://club.alembic.com/Images/411/414.html?1095191644 - The history and concept of the bass is discussed there.

The name Jimmy Johnson Signature Deluxe was given to the bass by Mica at Alembic. To my mind that's about as official as you can get. Jimmy was involved with the design and concept of the bass (and has played this actual bass). It was to become a signature line similar to the SC and MK models. So far I think this may be the only one in existence. While it emulates a lot of the things Jimmy likes about his Alembics it is, naturally, a cheaper alternative than his Series IIs. Appearance-wise there are marked differences too between this and Jimmy's S IIs.

Thanks for your interest, feel free to bid.

Thanks for the info, Mik. I looked closer at the other thread and I can see what you mean about it being confusing!

If you compare it to Clarke and King Deluxes, it doesn't quite match - but as you say, Mica called it what she called it. The bottom line is that whoever wants it needs to see if it meets the features they like.

But I can't see how it wouldn't! What a work of art. I love walnut more and more and more!

No problem eff. I've had a lot of interest in this bass - it's a very unusual combination of many (good) things. I'll be sorry to see it go.

Agreed, the walnut on this bass is quite amazing.

Cheers

The way I've always looked at the Clark and King basses is that they (and the EVH and Jimmy Johnson) siganture models are all Signature models. Each may come as standard with a different body shape, but each signature body style and associated scale length is interchangable with the other signature models (if I'm not mistaken)for no added cost.  The electronics package (Signature) is the same, as are all (I think) other features offered on the Standard and Deluxe Signature models. Similarly, the custom quote generator includes the same set of upgraded top and back laminates at no added charge, regardless of whether you quote a bass as a Stanley Deluxe or a King Deluxe.  I think it's great to designate some basses Clarks, others as Kings, EVH's, Jimmy Johnsons, etc.  But when comparing available and standard features, prices etc among different Alembic models, the fact that a bass is a Signature bass seems to be the only critical thing.

Have I got that right?  I can't think of any exceptions to what I've said.

Hi Bill, I'm not entirely sure really. My 1991 EVH Signature doesn't carry Signature electronics (it has separate volume, low-pass filter and 3-position q-switch for each pickup and a real standby switch with indicator LED - don't have to unplug, no battery drainage). The latest EVH model 'The Fish' has customised/expanded Series II electronics.

Someone please correct me if necessary, and certainly don't take this the wrong way, but apparently the Mark King and Stanley Clarke signature models are 'standard' models, while the JJ, EVH and JPJ models up until now are customs...

Hm-hm ...
signature stands for helping designing in general.
Now Alembic wouldn't be Alembic if there wasn't (again) a mix-up between model names and electronic names.
See: a Rogue is in fact a model and not the name of the Electronics beacuse those came first on the Europa. Now is there FURTHER confusion of what the Alembicians mean with electronics: does that word UNCLUDE the PU's or not. I saw recently somewhere an Elan with JJ PU's and Europa electronics.
So ...we are in deep now.

Reminding the days that Edwin STARTED his signature model, he absolutely DIDN't want a VOL - PAN combination, the set-up found on the Mark King and the SC signature (as you all know the original instruments owned by those artist were Series I and II's). So the EVH signature electronics were  NOT signature electronics . Edwin went for Vol, filter and Q PER PU and a PU-selector.
Another feature was the 3-position Q-switch. If I remember well the original Signature electronics had 2 position Q-switches.

The elctronics used on a EVH-signature model are in fact close to the Anniversary electronics.

Well ...I think I Lost you all now so I quit!

Paul the bad one

Oh ...and I forget that I saw A Mark King Signature with Rogue electronics on Fatboy PU's ...pretty confusing huh ....
Bwah ...the basses and guitars stay FLIPPIN' GREAT would Brother Mike say! Whatever they may be called

Paul, that's the one I picked up. The build sheet lists it as an Elan Plus. The Plus denotes the Europa electronics. According to the original owner the J p/u closest to the neck was done in place of a P at the discretion of Alembic, due to the owner's slap style, and the fact that it was a fretless.....

When using a model name to describe an electronics package, I've always took it to exclude the pickups.... but that's just me.

Im having an Essence bass built right now, but Im using parenthases for both words, because they describe the instrument rather loosely!
