1979 Series 2 short scale for sale!
« on: August 25, 2007, 07:07:27 AM »
Hi Guys

I have had this bass for 3 years or so... had many good times... but i'm getting into a bit into more funky / groovy stuff and it is time for a 5 string.

I have really enjoyed my time with this bass, and Im sorry to see it go... but I just don't play it enough any more... and this bass deserves to  be played.

The bass has been refinished and is not a perfect finish as you can see in the pics.  It has side LEDs (red) The graphite neck is rare and I find it gives me great resonance and bottom end.

I am in Adelaide Australia, I will ship to US included in the price.

I have original power supply (US Power) I use an adaptor to use it in Australia.

Not sure what price to ask for it... cost me over $4K Austrailian? any suggestions?

thanks

Mike Palmer

I love it and would buy it in a second if I were in the market (or employed...).

It's a relatively simple/mundane wood recipe, but the graphite neck is a rarity that will garner interest.  You should be able to get all of your money back at a minimum.  There are a couple of guys out here who own or have owned these and they should be able to tell you what premium they may command over regular Series II instruments.

Good luck!

That bass must have a few stories in it...I'm willing to bet it's a killer instrument. Mine is the best bass I've ever played.
Not sure if I can be of much help advice-wise, but feel free to e-mail me and I'll tell you what I can. Good luck.

Man.  Tough call.  I'm just guessing at this:  The graphite neck, in a short scale Alembic makes it an exceedingly rare commodity - both because it's a short scale graphite neck (I've never seen one outside this context) and a graphite Alembic. On the other hand, as you point out, the current finish is nothing to write home about.  Also, though I'm a great fan of simple mahogany basses, your bass can't boast a fancy top wood (though exotic woods were, by far, not as common in Alembics in '79). Another thing - a question - has the bass had the upgrade at Alembic to its electronics?  If not, that's likely an expense a buyer would face.

All that speculation aside, as Bob said, there are more knowledgable folks here (Like the Sheriff, with hands-on experience in basses like this) who could give you more insight.  In any event, please keep us posted and I hope Club members will have an opportunity to bid when you decide what you want.

Good luck.

I saw the bass for sale on eBay.
It appeared two or three times.
Unfortunately body back veneer was rubbed out, when it was repaired.
Here is the pict.

But the bass is still very nice.
I am very interested it, but I need to money for repair my small body 5 strings bass.

Thanks for posting the back Eiji,
I thought one of the uploaded pics was of the back (I must have mixed up the filenames)

It appears to me when the bass was refinished it was sanded back too much or something like that (It does not seem to be a structural repair. The laquer that it has been finished with has been put on quite rough (you can see the crack in the finish at the base of the neck...

Also price wise Im looking at offers over US$3000, Ill post bass on ebay next week if there are no takers here...

thanks

Mike

Hi Guys,
Firstly I would like to appologise for not making it clearer about the Back of the bass being repaired...

I have now listed the bass on Ebay with no reserve at

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=120167261581

Once it is sold I will be looking for a good alembic 5 string (can't be without one for too long!)

thanks again guys
