I forget that this is primarily a bass forum and you guys mostly all know more about sound than I do, but on guitars (as opposed to basses) players choose maple (or on expensive instruments) ebony fretboards to get a more responsive (you might say brighter) sound where rosewood may be rounder. In a bass, where the sound is down in the octaves, the harder woods like ebony make the bass sound cleaner (to me) and rosewood may sound more muddy. The built in electronics on a guitar may make a double whammy with the ebony making the sound strident. Of course you can control that electronically, but the rosewood may be more musical on a guitar with a built in preamp. Just my take
