1993 Essence
« on: August 16, 2011, 03:36:24 PM »
Hi everyone, I'm new to this site and hoping to get some input.  I have inherited a 1993 Essence.  I do not play the bass and I have no use for it.
I did take it will local guitar store and was told the bass is in excellent condition.  They were honest and told me their clientele probably couldn't afford it.  They said the appraised value is about 2900.
My question is,  does that sound correct and what is the best venue for selling the bass?
Thanks for any help in advance.

Sounds a little high but really need more info.
Is it a 4,5,or 6 string?
Side LEDs?
Serial No.
Hard Shell Case?
I resontly sold an Essence 6er for way under $2900.
Just sold a Rouge 5 string for way under $2900.

Please post some photos and there are those on this site that can and will help.

For a used Essence, it would have to have a few upgrades to go for $2900. That is entirely possible. It's also possible that a store would try to retail it at $2900 even if it would be unlikely to fetch quite that much in a private sale. Note also that prices on used Alembics have dropped a bit with the economy, so a store that doesn't follow them might easily be mistaken about value. A Blue Book doesn't have much chance of getting it right with all the factory customizations that occur on Alembic instruments and generally low volume of sales.

As far as the Rogue selling for way under $2900, how quickly did that sell? Two to three weeks, right? That bass was a great deal, and some would call it under-priced.

It will take an understanding of the configuration of the Essence and probably some pictures to get a fair estimate of value from the crew around here. Even then, there will be a range of prices the bass could sell for. The higher in the range you ask, the longer it will take to find a buyer.

As far as the best venue for selling, a sale here usually occurs at a fair price and to someone who will appreciate the instrument. Members who have been here for a few years are also less likely, IMO, to be scammers than the typical internet population. As a new member yourself, buyers may look for some extra assurances from you.

You would possibly get a few dollars more on eBay, but there are all the hassles and risks of eBay associated with that, including paying for a listing that might not result in a sale.

If you show us pics we will know more . Like Bob wrote we can see if it has factory upgrades like a sustain block and / or electronics package upgrades .etc ... ... ...  An included  road case will bring up the price as well .

Right Bob,
The Rouge sold quickly at a fair price HOWEVER,
I purchased the Rouge at a very fair price also..way under $2900.
I probably could  have gotten more thru e bay or craigslist but I purchased the bass from an Alembic dealer with help from members of the club. I simply would rather pass the bass on to someone whom really appreciates it which the buyer was estatic!
Sometimes it's not about the money but the appreciation you recieve in return.
It's a good feeling!

Here is a picture of the body,  it does have a hardshell case, serial number is 93K7684.  No side LED's that I see.

Looks pretty basic to me. I paid $1300 for the same model 4-5 years ago, which was concededly a steal. Besides I'd say your Essences top wood has a more beautiful grain than mine.

Look at this one for $2000, that's been in the classifieds for a few months:

Other than the finish it's comparable to yours.

I'd go with  cozmik_cowboy, time for bass lessons. ;-)
