Aguilar GS 112 12" Cabinet w/Factory Padded Cover
« on: February 04, 2012, 11:50:13 AM »
Small bump in the road after run-in with California DMV (pun intended) forces sale of one or both of my Aguilar GS 112 single 12 cabinets (the model with tweeters, not the GS 112NT). These are 8 ohms and rated at 300 watts. Weight: 42 lbs.

Very well taken care of physically and sonically.  Listed on SF Bay Area craigslist for $400. Sell to Alembic members for $350 each.

They reside in a studio near the Oakland Coliseum if you want to audition them. Otherwise, I can deliver to greater Bay Area. Prefer not to hassle with packing/shipping but anything's possible....

Sidebar question: I have been completely satisfied with these cabs and they're definitely Alembic-friendly, but just in case I do move them I'm curious about other single 12's or even 15's out there. I don't slap/pop and don't really want a tweeter. Am considering a single 15 cab like a Bag End for old school wallop with just a hint of fingernail-induced leading edge snap. Any other suggestions?

Thanks, folks!

Hey, Glynn!
Thanks for the tip. Maybe I'll make a trip over to Gelb Music in Redwood City and check one of these cabinets out!

Sam,

You'll LOVE the Bag End 15's with your Alembic.

Toby, they certainly look mouth-watering. Do they use banana plugs or speakons?

Banana plugs, but I have seen a few threads on other bass forums where people have added the speakon connectors.

Perhaps the newer versions do use speakon.... I don't know for sure.  I think you'll enjoy the sound of them. Very warm and articulate. I like them with the Alembic very much. I know there are quite a few here on the forum who play through them.

Bagend's website says 1/4 & banana.

Personally I like Banana plugs for speaker terminations for various reasons . I have many old Alembic  and  old GD  Wall of  Sound and   Bagend  cabinets that use banana termination.

One of the advantages is that you can run any combination in parallel with the double bananas that I like to use. You just have to consider what your amp is capable load wise in ohms; for example two 8 OHM box's in parallel = 4 OHMS load ... ETC ... ... ...   I like to use 12 gauge to make my own speaker cables ,I have also sometimes used 10 gauge.

Thanks for all the info, guys! I've got plenty to chew on.

I mentioned a long time ago that I played in Osiris (Pigpen's younger brother was in the band and the Dead were very generous to their extended family) and played through 4 single 15 Alembic cabs  laid sideways + a 2 x 10 or 12 guitar cab sitting on top of all that! The preamp circuit of a GMT 300B fed into an indestructible MacIntosh 2300 powering all that stuff and it was like the movie, Earthquake!

I've secretly coveted 15's ever since....

Sam,______I was at one of your Gigs with Osiris when you guys shared the bill with  Beluga Whale I used to help them out with their equipment and such and jam with them as well. I think we have had this discussion in the past perhaps .  That gig was so long ago ! over 30 years ?   The only bad part about the 15's GD wall of sound  cabs is transporting them , especially if they are loaded with Gauss 15's .  I used to pick them up and put them on my shoulder decades ago _ not any more !!!  LOL ___ I have invested in nice moving dollies.

Hey, Wolf

I may have joined Osiris after the Beluga Whale gig. This was while the Dead were on a touring hiatus and Bob Weir had Kingfish going on at the time. Osiris' original bass player got into an altercation with one of the 'fish's roadies during a joint gig and kicked him in the man-icles. Apparently Osiris was told their bass player had to go if they ever hoped to share another bill, so I replaced him.

Sam, thanks for the history confirmation. I remember now  a little latter from that gig I also helped out Beluga Whale at a gig they shared with Kingfish but Bob Weir was not present anymore . Sadly, not much later Dave Torbert passed away.

Those speakers of yours will make a nice catch for someone needing an easy to move good sounding solution.
