Hey Everyone,
I picked up this bass with the hopes of passing it on to the bass player in our band because it seemed like a really good deal. He's now having second thoughts (he has a new baby on the way and senior management seems to be enacting veto power). It's an '89 Tulipwood Elan, 5 strings, with three Purpleheart neck laminates, what appears to be a maple body, and Volume, Pan, Filter, and Q Switch. The bass has some dings, and the finish is cracked around the input jack (so someone must have stepped on a cord at some point). The jack is stable and completely functional. Otherwise it is in great shape, and it plays and sounds wonderful. I?ve requested a full build sheet from Alembic, and an estimate to recreate the instrument. Back in 2008 Mica had this to say about Tulipwood:
?Tulipwood is a premium wood. As a member of the Rosewood family, it sounds pretty much like Rosewood, Coco Bolo, etc.?
Tulipwood is listed as an $800 upgrade on the site, and the Purpleheart laminates are also a nice upgrade. I?m not desperate to sell it, and have really been enjoying the opportunity to play it. The reality of the situation is that I can probably only justify keeping it for so long before I need to consider selling it (since I play lead guitar in our band, and it?s just going to sit in a case). Before I sell it I?m going to buy a new case and strings (the previous owner wrapped the G string around the capstan in the wrong direction, which bugs me from a cosmetic perspective). Unlike instruments I?ve shipped in the past, I?m not taking any chances, so this will be sold with the new case and professionally packed by the shipping company.
I?m open to serious offers, and would like to sell it for a fair market value. For the sake of full disclosure, I bought it for $1600, but I think it?s probably worth quite a bit more. I?m in no rush to sell it, but if someone made an offer I thought reasonable, I would let it go. I?ll accept paypal provided that the buyer pays the fees. I?d also accept money order, or personal check (but I would have to wait for the check to clear). Shipping will also be the buyer?s responsibility. I?ll take some more photos soon, but this collage should give you a rough idea.
