« on: January 05, 2006, 06:26:31 PM »
Hi all,

I've seen Hyaks referred to here but know very little about them.The more discerning eye will spot if it's the real deal,I don't know what to look for.I'm not looking to purchase this bass but thought it was worth posting in case any of you might be.You can find it here,4th bass down;

www.basszone.it/usedgear.htm

The 1800Euro asking price,according to the currency converter,equates to;

US$2175.34,
CAN$2530.48,
GBP?1240.77.

I'd be interested in hearing the opinons of any cognoscenti among you.

Ciao,

Simon.

That looks like the real deal to me.  It seems that the control knobs have been changed.  It also seems that there is some funny business going on around the q switches.  From the pic, it looks like one is larger than the other.  Maybe not though.  It is just hard to tell from the picture.  I also cannot read the description to see if it comes with the original case and power supply.  To me that is a selling point.  When these basses were made, they were experimenting with finishes.  So some of the instruments came with laquer finishes are now very cracked up and weathered.  Again hard to tell from the pic.  I think that the ones sprayed with urethane held up better.

The first Hyak I laid my hands on was a fretless.  It was an all walnut bass with side LED's.  It was awesome.  That was in 1978 or 79.   Another bassist from New Orleans bought that bass and still has it to this day.  It is his main bass.

After reading between the lines on the description.  It looks like it says that the pickups are Bartolini with Stars Guitars electronics.  That is quite possible, but that does not look like Barts to me.  Hard to tell from the picture.  It also looks like the case is not included.

See if they can supply a shot of the control cavity.  That will tell all.  If they can give a picture of the inside as good as you did, that would be great.

Fabio at Bass Zone has been e-mailing me about that bass. He did not know what it was. I actually told him to check in here for more information, as I thought Michael, Rob and others may be able to tell him more than I did.

Hello Eiji,

I just e-mailed Fabio, and let him know you were interested. The picture I have is the same that is on his site.

If you give him a few days (he's mostly a one-man shop) I'm sure he'll send pictures.

Good to see you fishing for awesome fretless basses again.  I helped you make the connection for the Series from Guitar Center in Schaumburg (near Chicago).  I just need to alert the club that, if you get this one, you are officially on the way to gaining control of desirable fretless basses on the planet (except Val's).  Three continents.  He can't be stopped.  Best wishes on the conquest.

Hi Val,
Thanks for the info.
I am waiting for his e-mail.

Hi dw,
I can't forget your help !

If I get next fretless bass, I will convert to fretted my Fan head 5 st.
Fretless with plastic line is buzzy at some point.
I think such seamless fingerboard is much better.
And my another fretless (6 strings short scale bass fitted Hi-C and Hi-F) has wood line.
It is not so buzzy.
