As they say on the radio, long time listener first time caller (I've been reading the posts since I bought my first Alembic around a month or so ago but haven't been inclined to post anything yet).  But a nice Series II on ebay has me thinking.  The question for the experts is--how does the price look to you?

Hi David, and welcome.  Since it is a 2000, it will not need the electronics upgrade; and personally, I think that is an important consideration.  The inlays are fairly unique, and are an expensive option; so, if you really like the inlays, that's another consideration.  I played with the picture a little in a photo editor, and I think that the Walnut laminates are going to look a lot better in person than they do in the seller's pics.  I didn't see anywhere that there is a case; so you would want to confirm that.  A method that several of the members here use is to price a similar model new, with the options you would like to have, and figure a reasonable dealer discount; then compare that number to the price of this listing.  (And of course another factor to consider is that this bass you could have now; a new one would take a while. )  So, if you would really love to own a Series II 5 string with Alchemy inlays, and you don't want to pay the additional amount needed to order a new one, and keeping in mind that basses with Alchemy inlays don't trade very often, then $6,500 may indeed be a reasonable price.  Now, I wouldn't pay that much; but then I'm not looking for a five string with Alchemy inlays.

I rarely post, but do occassionally lurk and I thank all for the valuable information I've gleaned (Thomastik strings, lemon oil, action adjustments, etc).  Since I just picked up this bass for the listing price, I figured I'd let you know how the deal goes.  This is my second Series II.  The first is a '89 Walnut 4 String.  I had been planning to upgrade the electronics, but this seemed like a much better deal and fortunately for me, I was the only one to actually bid.  I'll post pictures of the two together when I get the 5 String, providing of course I survive my wife's reaction to me buying a second Series II...she won't know until it arrives.

Cheers!

Hey Chris--I didn't pull the trigger but was hoping a club member got it.  LMK how you like it AND about the wife thing (I'm going to get my Series sooner or later and will need to know how to introduce it at home).  Congrats!

The bass arrived 11 Mar 05.  It's gorgeous!  My wife took the arrival well.  She's named it Babylon because the inlayed symbols look like a foreign language to her.  Whatever makes her happy, so long as I'm not sharing the couch with my new bass.

Hadn't been played in awhile so the action was pretty messed up, batteries dead, and the screws and nuts from the five-pin connector were missing.  Found one screw loose in the case and one nut inside the bass.  I imagine the others were lost for a while because there wasn't a second nut in the bass and there's nowhere for it to go unless it was removed previously.  For now, I've cannabalized my 4-string, will call to order replacements this week.

Put TI Jazz Flats on it and set the action, fixed the 5-pin and tested everything.  It's perfect!

Will post pictures soon.

Cheers!

I did that once, and barely survived even though the bass I bought cost less than a tenth what your new baby did.
Congratulations on both your wonderful bass and wonderful wife, and as that palembic character says, PICTURES PICTURES PICTURES!

I almost tried that recently when I bought a Bond Electraglide off of ebay, but I chickened out and told her before it arrived.  It helped that I paid a couple of hundred dollars less than the value listed in the Vintage Guitar Price Guide.  Hey honey, we made a good investment!  (yea, right).  It also helped that she thought it looked cool when she saw it.

Chris:  Enjoy!  We want pictures!

"she won't know until it arrives"  Did that with the bass I got from Stanley.  Good thing she's a Stanley fan and was at the concert where we saw him play it.  Otherwise I might still be pulling the splinters out of my ears.  Did it again with another custom bass I had made.  Had it hidden (or so I thought) in my music room.  For my birthday, my wife presented me with this cake, that closely resembled the "hidden" bass.  Then she said, "Your birthday present is we don't have to talk about this until tomorrow."    Here's the cake

  Here's the bass

Palembic asked Ahum ...brother James ...oh ...uhu ...you actually MADE this???

Paul,
When I wrote ...another custom bass I had made I meant that I had it made, not that I personally had made it. My participation in its creation was limited to picking materials and pieces and writing checks.  I guess the way I phrased it, it could have been interpreted both ways.  I guess if I ever become a Paul, I can be Paul the Ambiguous One

Peace,

James
