Series I on Bassgear
« on: June 14, 2005, 10:58:21 AM »
There's a SI on Bassgear with an asking price of $2500 - could be a good deal.  I have no connection to the seller and I know nothing about the instrument, just thought I'd post a 'heads-up' here.

Hello Adam, Gary here. Just a little note and a big thank you for the heads up on this S1. I picked her up on Monday and she is a beauty. Thanks to your help I am the proud owner of an oldie but goody. A photo of the old girl is on the Low End web site gallery of basses. She is listed under Alembic, Zebrawood, medium scale.

If you are ever in the Detroit area you've got a friend, and a bass you may visit. Thanks again, Gary.

Hey Gary,

Glad I was able to help you get a hold of a very nice looking bass - I'm from upstate NY but if I'm ever in your neck of the woods I'll drop you a line.

Take care,
Adam

Thanks Dave. The more I play this old baby the more I like it. Got one noisy pick up which may require the update. That's ok as she is a keeper. I've been pleasently surprised by how comfortable she is considering her size. All my other basses are getting nervous.

Gary; have you adjusted the humcancelling trimpots?  If not, go here for the procedure.

Thanks Howierd, as I read about all the ways the fella's are customizing their set ups, I'm amazed at how many options the Series allow you. It's very exciting learning this whole new science.

Hi Dave, thanks for the heads up on the trimpots. I am able to get the neck pickup very quiet. The bridge pickup remains loud and directional. I believe it is the bridge as the two rear knobs control the noisy one. She sounds like an old Stratocaster through a cheap amp. I switched the pickup connections at the circuit board which yielded the same result. Also the front 3way switch squeals loudly in the down position. I emailed Mica on the problem and she is going to run it by her Dad and advise. Even though she is hurt she has a powerful, rich tone and feel. See what the man says and take it from there. I'm thinking of going to Series II electronics if she goes home for the upgrade, thoughts?

I've never owned a Series II, but I can only imagine that the increased flexability of the CVQ is a nice thing to have!

Dave:  You are right.  I was just noticing last night that the CVQ on my S2 gives you a much more refined way to zero in on particular resonances than the fixed-boost Q on my Spoiler did.  It's very similar to the damping control on the SF-2.
