I like Karl's suggestion.  Interpol no doubt has a team en route as we type.

Hi Brian; welcome to the group!  You can post general questions about Series basses in the Alembic Basses & Guitars section.  Also, check out the FAQ and Must Reads section too.

Brian, welcome to the club and good luck to you in your search for an Alembic.
This thread and the related ones are a good example of why you should investigate things here on the club.  The person doing this listing of the Roman Conquerer is making a pretty clumsy attempt at it.  However, some people are fairly clever.  Not much gets by the collective membership here.
Good to see someone from Wpg on here.  I have many good memories of the few months I spent there in the early '70s.

davehouck thanks, I'll post my questions tomorrow

richbass939 glad you liked Winnipeg when you were here, you must have been here in the summer, winters are brutal here.

Well it didn't take long to hear back from Clara Lyons. This is the reply I received.

From: Clara Lyons

Hello,
As i told you before this guitar will come from Greece on my expense!
Also, I have to let you know that I want the payment priori shipping since I will ship it in the same day or next day the payment is complete .
For the moment I can only accept a wire transfer as a payment method and the fastest is Western Union. Also, you have nothing to worry about because this deal will be done in a secure way if you prefer.
The most important thing in all my activity here is that I am affiliated at Ebay Square Trade , I have a purchase protection account for 10,000$ and I assume you know what this means.
How you are protected by Square Trade,in case we have a deal:
1) If you will not receive the guitar as i described to you, although this is not the case,Square Trade will refund you with 100% from the whole amount which you paid me.Even in case you will not receive the guitar, they will refund you the money.
2) You can send the money to my name and address but you will not give me the details from the payment. You will give the details to Square Trade. They will verify the payment and if is OK,if the money exist and are available under my name they will notify me to proceeder with the shipping. After you receive and see that the guitar is the one you want, you just notify Square Trade to forward  me the payment details in order for me to pick up my money.
Let me know if this is OK with you,so that we can move forward with this deal! To let Square Trade know about our deal i need your full name, full shipping address and your ebay user id and they will contact you shortly!

To not make a confusion please send me your details in this mode:

Ebay USER ID:.............
Full name:............
Address:..............
Zip code:...........
City:.............
State:...........
Country:...........

I'm waiting for your reply asap
Thank you
Clara Lyons

If she where in the Square Trade program, it would be indicated on her profile page; and unless I overlooked it, that doesn't appear to be the case.  And short of sending cash in the mail, Western Union is probably the riskiest method of closing an Ebay transaction.  As someone else mentioned earlier, this person appears sloppy, and probably has jail time in her future, if not for Ebay fraud, then for some other activity in the tragedy that must be her life.

i think you're absolutely on the mark, dave. however, i think you're wrong about one thing. i'd give 20 to 1 odds that this clara isn't even a woman.  probably a guy posing as a woman to make id even more difficult---another layer of deception to throw people off the track of the real attempted thief.

I wonder if clara reads the Alembic posts.

Since the Conqueror is still listed, I hope that Karl is right about tracking down this criminal.  What other reason would eBay have for leaving this fraudulent listing active?  I sure hope law enforcement of some type is involved here.  Has anyone forwarded Clara's replies to eBay's enforcement people, whoever they may be?

The only way eBay will pull this listing is if Jeff files a complaint about his images being stolen.  I noticed the seller changed the picture source so the words SCAM have been removed.

Well, Auction Cafe was the actual seller of Jeff's bass; and they have indeed been making substantial efforts to have Ebay remove the listing, so far with no success, only the we'll look into it response.

Oh and by the way; Mike at Auction Cafe asked that I let everyone here know how much they appreciate our efforts, and he would like to make clear that only the listing was copied and that Auction Cafe's account was not compromised.

I've just seen this thread. When I saw the bass listed a couple of hours after it was put up, I thought it smelled bad, and emailled the bidder (Ross), and  Auction cafe.

Never got to see the hacked pix with 'scam' on them, which would have given me a good chuckle, but I've just looked and the auction has been removed.

If you're going to try to perpetrate a scam on a high end bass, a bit of research will show that Alembic enthusiasts are a small, discriminating community and news of it would spread fast (which it did!) especially for such an expensive and unique instrument.

It always amazes me that people will choose such unique and instantly recognizable instruments to perpetrate these schemes.  There must be a million identical looking strats out there that people would pay gobs for, and they choose a triple Omega S-2 Alembic with custom inlays and upgrades.  Sure, go for the big score, but come on, use some brains.

Hey, I got the Mona Lisa for sale, really . . .

I apologize for being so late to respond to this thread as this is the first time I have seen it! First, the bass has been sold for over two weeks now and it should have shipped on Friday, August 12.  Second, I simply can't believe the number of brazen attmepts to scam unsuspecting buyers with hijacked images of my former bass.  Third, Mike at Auction Cafe has been fantastic in terms of his handling these repeated scam attempts, but ebay has been too slow to deal with them.  Fourth, I would like to thank you club members for your unrelenting pursuit of the truth with all things Alembic.  You guys (and ladies) are truly an awesome bunch and quite the power block.  Keep it up!
