Hi Steve and Patrick; if I remember correctly, when I previously checked there had been one bidder; and obviously when the listed price is $3,500 and there is only one bidder, then the high bid is $3,500.

hi, dave. i, too, saw the posted bid of $3500 which sat there, unchallenged, almost since the first day of the auction; however, if you check the bid history by clicking on 0 bids, you find out garyd44 retracted a bid of $5K due to an inability to make contact w/the seller. i just report it the way i read it. maybe garyd44 put in a bid of $3500 and then went in and rebid $5K so that he would still win if bidding went that high. that's the way i've won several of my alembics. however, i stand by my assertion that's an inordinately high amount of money for anyone to bid and it is indeed unfortunate that the seller chose to let someone else list his bass, initially describe it as a series II, list the wrong serial number, and then cost the seller a possible $5K sale---which buyer would have been obligated to honor had bidding gone high enough-----all because seller was using an unreliable ghost agent to list and sell the bass. to me, this all sounds strange, but it's a beauty bass, eh? yah, eh!

pmoran,

I'm thinking that garyd44 put in a maximum bid of $5,000.  Since the opening bid was $3,500, that's the way it showed.  If someone else had come in and bid, say $3,700, then garyd44's bid would ratchet up to $3,800.  His maximum would still be $5,000, but he would show as the leading bidder at some lower number until someone else bid more than $5,000.

Steve, sorry to hear about your dog.  Having had to part with my long time companion this April was extremely tough for my family, so I can appreciate your position.  Good luck on selling the bass.  Posting it for sale on this club and at Talkbass.com with pictures of you holding it might put some folks at ease about it not being a fraudulent offering.  Alembics are an investment and also have high fraud potential (Roman Conquerer?).

Peace,

James

Guilty as charged your honor! Pat, if you had represented me during my sqabble with the misses, I'd still have my house, car, boat, pride, P Bass,
......ahhh... she can keep the P Bass.

You make a convincing case. I'm scared.

Steve, can you help the defense here? Throw us a line? Does the glove fit?

Wait a second, stop the presses. We may have mitigating circumstances here. It would appear Steve is a full time musician. During a 10 year period of my wasted youth I made a living playing bass. As I recall, when functioning as a full time musician, the rules of the daywalkers world do not apply. I would often forget the endless minutia of day life, like filing income taxes in 1975 & 76.(Could have used you then too Pat, I.R.S. agents don't buy the, oops I forgot bit) God I miss those days.

Okay Steve, I got your back here. When you get a chance come save me. Better hurry, it's looking like the Little Big Horn here, and I'm lacing up my running shoes.

Sorry I don't understand the last post. As I said before I can e mailed directly and Valentino also knows my guitar. Quite simply I was a fool to let my ex friend (ex wife ) post it. The sale of this instrument has always been above board. We simply need the money for Zeus our dogs care. That is the most important thing to us and at $500.00 - $1000.00 per Vet visit we are running low on resources

I' ve spoken to Steve a bunch of times and the whole serial number thing is due to the fact that over time numbers stamped on the headstock can fade and look like something else.
Steve's a very nice guy and a gentleman.

Hello Steve, my best wishes to you and Zeus.

Hi Steve, sorry to hear about the puppy problems.
No worries, lots of Alembic scams out there and if the facts start to look sidyways, the troops get restless. Valentino has put the matter to rest. James offers some excellent advice above.

Good luck, Gary

Steve,
I'd be interested in the bass if it hangs around a bit...the one thing to love about income-tax season is new toys! E-mail me if you wish.
What's Zeus' diagnosis/prognosis?
Thanks,
KFS

I'm glad this finally worked out. Sometimes I think these witch-hunts get a little out of control.

Hi Jalevinemd, I too am glad it got straightened out.  I wonder if the witch hunts are necessarily a bad thing. They may get tough as the facts do not add up, but I appreciate the fact that members research Alembic's on the market. It was a great help when I began to search for my first bass. I was very naive about the Alembic world. Thanks to some excellent detective work by various members here, I was able to avoid a couple of real deals. At these prices, the help is priceless.

In this instance, poor Steve did take some shots over the bow though the bass was legit. However, it appears the listing was flawed. As such, the Alembic C.S.I. got involved. At the end of the day it brought out the facts, which should dramatically improve the market for this bass. I would not have gone near this baby prior to this thread. Now I'm thinking, hmmmmm..... I could get another year out of my 1990 Mazda if I bought this beauty.
