I emailed the seller and the reply sounds very dodgy indeed, mentioning the deal a number of times and an eBay program that will protect both of us. Huh? Escrow, perhaps? I asked why it was so cheap and a private auction running for 3 days only, have had no response so far.

You should NEVER e-mail someone like this!!! Often they have ways to steel your information (I don't know how it was done but it was) by you simply e-mailing them and then they use YOUR good name and e-bay account information to scam other people. I replied to someone like this once and a few days later got a message from e-bay telling me my account had been compromised and was being used in a scam so they FROZE my account. I had to call them and jump through a few hoops to clear up my account. I also had to get new account names and passwords for both e-bay and Paypal to make sure the jerk wouldn't rob me or use my information in the future. It was a big pain in the butt and all because I sent someone an e-mail. Evilgus ... if you e-mailed this person I would suggest you change your e-bay and paypal passwords just to be on the safe side ... even if e-bay doesn't contact you.

Interesting that the text mentions a Buy It Now amount, but there is no Buy It Now button. Doesn't smell kosher IMHO.

Everything this person added under the id is a starting price of $13.00 with a buy it now of $1200.00. Not to mention the real owner of the account appears to be French. These folks aren't very bright are they?

Well, all of us were new to the Internet once. All it takes is one newbie to get taken and the scammer has $1200, if not more (like a bank acct number).

And like 88P says, the French acct was probably stolen in a similar fashion.

BAD KARMA. Phooey.

By the way, a google search of the scammer's email addr shows up in a list of scammed auction names.

not quite, Ellery...

you can shoot an email over to the potential buyer to warn him. I was warned two years ago when I was a noob, and I took advantage of that feature twice to alert somebody else.

However, nowadays I see more and more eBay auctions with anonymous bidding history such as high bidder bidder7, second high bidder bidder2... I guess eBay does this to protect second high bidders from receiving fake second chance offers, but the downside is you can't warn the high bidder in those auctions anymore... oh, well.

I think ebay's policy is going toward anything that bids over $200, the bidders list becomes private.

And you can't always directly contact a bidder, because now they sometimes block emails unless you are the buyer or seller in an auction.

Ebay is too big to police itself, really, nowadays. A shame but probably true.
