Peavey plus Alembic?

Is this a good thing? I'm not sure if I should laugh out loud or just buy it or both..........

If I had the bread I'd buy the bass, strip the p/ups & pre amp and sell the bass with some other p/ups for around $200.00.

I don't know. I know how a lot of people feel about Peavey but at least for me the Peavey foundation was my very first good bass. I was upgrading from a Cort in the mid 80's and I felt like I had just purchased a Porsche. I still have that bass. The action is perfect, neck is straight, you could not fit a hair between the neck pocket and neck, the finish is great and has not changed in 22 years. The electronics are not fancy at all (just passive vol and tone) but they are quiet and sound great. I paid $300.00 for it brand new with a hardshell case. It's not an Alembic by any means but it got me through a whole lot of gigs.

I agree. The USA made Peavey's were quite reasonable both economically and for playability. But it is an odd combination. Heck, the pups alone would garner his asking price on Ebay. Like I said, I'm not sure whether to buy it or not. :-D

There are many mediocre Peavey instruments, but there are also some very nice pieces. I can't say I've ever come across true Peavey junk. It's mostly working-class gear that functions and is durable at a very fair price. I would contend that a Peavey TL-5/6 or Rudy Sarzo model, if upgraded with Alembic electronics, would be very close to the real thing in almost every practical matter.

The Peavey T-40 is one of my favorite basses. I've owned three over the years and won't ever sell the one I currently own.

I'm actually considering this one- I have an old Ibanez PJ fretless that plays like a dream, but has some nasty pickups in it.... if I can confirm that the wiring harnesses haven't been mucked with I might just go after this one. I'll email the seller and see if they can provide a picture of the control cavity.

I'd like to be clear: In no way was I trying to disrespect Peavey. I just find this combination a bit odd. It is like dropping a Maserati engine in a VW Bug; it does not make it a Maserati. But it does peak my interest as I'd love to try this bass to hear the sound. I'd guess I'd learn a lot about both Alembic and Peavey. A very educational trial.

It's pretty common for those in the know to drop Alembic electronics into a bass that has proven to have good feel and natural tone. Things like this do show up fairly regularly.

This pickup upgrade makes sense to me.

Starting with a decent instrument and upgrading the pickups is a pretty natural evolution to my mind. Every electric guitar I own has either been customized or was custom built from its creation.

The original Peavey T-40 and T-60 instruments are still on my list of guitars that were a great deal brand new, and they need no customization to be great guitars in the here and now.

..and the T-60 pickups and electronics designed by Mr. Red rhodes...they are great pickups.
He also designed the trio preamp for GT.
My T-60 guitar plays as well as the leo era G&Ls with a touch of late 70's ibanez feel.

My solid state peavey 2-ohm pa head is a workhorse but lacks in tone...but it'll pump out ugly things all day long.

I've emailed the seller asking for pictures of the control cavity- if I get them via email I'll upload them here.

I'm not going to be bidding at the offered price, but will make the seller an offer if it doesn't sell. If anyone here is interested in bidding go for it!

you're making me nostalgic. A blond Peavey T-40 scored for $150 in a pawnshop was my second bass and first one that was actually playable. Sounded and looked great, but was heavy as hell!

This one is relisted- accepting offers at this point.

I emailed again asking for pictures of the control cavity- I got a response from them last time but it was just stating that it had sold locally. If I get pictures I'll post them here.

EDIT: I put in a low ball offer- I emailed the seller that I would increase my offer if he could get those pictures to me. We'll see what happens with this....
