Well, I don't know about you guys, but I'm waiting until he raises it to $7,500 before I start bidding. I figure the lower my stock portfolio goes the more I should also have to pay for a used bass.

Where the ad says that the power supply and cable are included, it also says: (Ok, I am bending a little)! I guess that means it's not the truth.

My Series I guitar was also built in 1976. Does that really mean it's worth more because it was the bi-centennial, as the ad claims?

Hey, the Yankees won the World Series in 1977, the same year my Series I 12 string was built. Does that make it more valuable, especially since both have the word Series in them! WOW, what a coincidence, this is downright spooky!

This has to be the oddest auction I've seen in a very long time. If the seller doesn't want to sell, just pull the auction. The only thoughts I have are that he hopes someone will bid to lock in before the price goes up, or maybe that it is necessary to boost the starting price to ensure the final value gets where he wants it to be as the auction end approaches.

Olie, it seems that the power supply and cable were added to be included as one of the updates. I know that if I were watching this auction as a potential buyer, I would be completely turned off by the antics. A stranger might be hesitant to put thousands of dollars at risk to make a serious deal with such an apparently flighty individual. Too many changes to the auction and who knows what you're actually going to get? Well, to each his own. Maybe someone will be interested enough to bid, maybe not. I know that, if I were willing to pay $5300 for the bass, I would have placed a bid by now to lock in the price based upon the increases.

If Hal really was willing to sell it to a club member for $3500, I think he would have chimed in or posted it here, particularly when multiple people expressed interest. If you're one of the interested parties, then figure out how to email Hal, directly or through eBay, and see what he has to say. While I would be scared off looking at the auction as a stranger, I wouldn't be afraid to deal with Hal directly.

Here's hoping that, one way or another, the bass finds a good home.

Bob, I was tempted to do exactly that, place a bid to lock in my price at least. But the seller scared me off of bidding; eBay is already a test of ones assessment of a sellers credibility w/o adding to the stress on a big purchase.

I have never stressed when buying from a forum member. I wish he had brought it here... guess he is playing a game with himself and bringing those of us that would seriously go after it along for the ride.

Seriously, I would not bother. There will be other basses in much better condition. Anyone who is continually inflating the price of an item in that manner and slinging that type of rhetoric - sales pitch, it doesn't smell right. I say pass on it, pass on it, pass on it. Just my opinion.

was not directed toward you, it was to express my bemusement over this... auction(?). I guess Hal is just having a little fun. If I were in Hal's shoes, I wouldn't want to sell the SI either. His Tomahawk concept is interesting, but an unknown as far as what the design will translate into. I would definitely hang-on to what I had until I had the Tomahawk in my hands.

Hal is having fun because we are responding to his antics. Look at his responses, he knows that in all likelyhood it will not be sold the way this auction is evolving. It will become a tree by then..look leaves are growing from the headstock.
On a more serious note, Stanley's bass have thinned down necks, assuming the fret board is thinned also, how does that affect the E and G strings, would they be too close to the edge of the fret board?

The string spacing is tighter at the nut, Roger. The result is strings that are closer to each other, not closer to the edge of the world.
