Irwin Guitar on the Bay
« on: November 05, 2009, 08:17:01 AM »
Check out this one.  I think it's been around before, I seem to remember the gibson fender strings.  WOW!!!  Normally I wouldn't even dream about spending $85K on a guitar, but with GIBSON FENDER STRINGS I'll have to give this some serious thought!  hehehehehe

PS:  Does anyone recognize the mystery singer, songwriter, dead guy?

Well I'd be interested if the original packaging for the strings were included with the guitar.. ......  I'd hate to spend that much and find  they were not genuine Gibson Fender strings...

I tried enlarging the receipt to see if that would help...I'm still stumped.

I asked the seller who it was, but he hasn't answered (maybe because I also pointed out that Wolf was not actually an Irwin)

Well, he answered.  Allowed as how Wolf was, indeed, born an Alembic, but argued that Doug had changed it so much that he was OK calling it an Irwin.  Didn't ID the other picker (on the receipt it looks like the first name's Brad & the second starts with B.  The line below says Healdsburg, CA, which I presume was where Brad resided)

I like the other guitar listed by this guy. (No, not for $85k, but it looks pretty cool). I couldn't find anything about Allan Thomson. Does anyone know anything about this luthier?

If I was a billionaire and money didn't matter anymore, I would so send my hired goons over to this guys house and knock some sense into him!

And I would sooooo WANT these guitars.  They are very nice.

Nothing gives a the personal touch you can only achieve with hired goons

Notice how they all are supposed to have been built for someone famous but they never seem to have taken delivery? By the way the receipt is only for a case. What proof that it was for the guitar? As far as I'm concerned these are worth the going rate for an every day Irwin, Oasis or Hyak.

Hey, you're right, Keith - I hadn't noticed that.  And not only is it for a case, it's for a Calzone case, and the case in his pictures doesn't look like any Calzone I ever saw.  So Brad, whoever he may be, probably isn't our putative famous dead guy.

I too take all the it was made for Garcia claims (including the one that accompanied Old #10) with a large grain of salt.  Nevertheless, I would expect a real Irwin guitar to be worth substantially more than an Oasis, Hyak, Dolan, or Becvar.  I suspect there were very few Irwin guitars ever made.  I have one that I'm about 90% sure is an Irwin, but it looks to be more of a highly modified instrument than one he built from scratch.  I also really like the two ebay guitars, but at $85K the seller is dreaming in technicolor HD surroundsound.

Why the hell does he have to mix up different brands of strings and what's wrong with DRs, anyway???

:-)

Pretty guitars, but he's smoking crack at that price.
