Is this the same that was for sale before? (got pulled before I clicked the link)
Mica was not so pleased with that one, though I think at $500 it would be a bargain (unless it was stolen from Alembic of course) for Alembic and a great addition to the showroom when finished.

I also remember Mica saying that they would love to hold on to the instruments for ten years to see how the wood is settling down, I guess here's their chance :-)

Like Mica said, if the factory decide not to finish an instrument, there is a reason, maybe with the wood or who knows.
If that was took out with no permission...well... 'nuff said.

I'm thinking, at what point in the process does a build get a s/n? Should this one have a s/n, and if so, wouldn't that make it traceable?

I believe the serial numbers are assigned very close to when an instrument is completed.

could it be a personal project that somebody made in their garage, by a bass enthusiast, who maybe couldn't afford the list price on a new alembic? After I got my 77 series I guitar, I certainly had the bug to make a hippie sandwich myself. Could have gotten that far, and realized he didn't know how to make a playable instrument, just an eye catching piece of woodwork
