Bass NW has been known to mislead customers on items in the past (not implying done with malice). Since the bass does have Series I electronics, it can be called a Series I bass, but it did not retail for $14,800, the standard S I price list amount stated by BNW for this bass, as it does not have back body lams, nor chrome hardware. Note, since I am not interested in the bass, I did not look past the obvious two items that stuck out to me. It is only six years old, so maybe the price is not too bad at $4,699.00. However, since is someone's custom order, it is possible that resaling it later maybe more difficult than you might expect, so not such a good investment at that price. Do ask for much better pictures, or ask someone in the Seattle area to please go check it out for you before you commit your money on the deal. Just things to consider before investing your hard-earned money in your pursuit of spiffy basses.

I've always had great dealings with BassNW. I lived in Seattle for 5 years and I was a frequent visitor. I think the key is to negotiate on price.

Actually, I believe the key in my dealing is I was in Maine buying what was being mis-described to me over the phone by commissioned idiots (not the owners) on a couple of deals for a 20th Anniversary and a Macassar ebony Elan about a decade ago. There was also a 35 scale bass with great inlays from the guy who worked for Michael Tobias back then. Two of the basses were in much worse condition than I was advised, and they (sales persons) were quite uninformed on what they were selling me, even - Such as the 35 scale was indeed a 35 scale bass, whose bone nut fell off when I was changing the strings. Dealing in person I would probably have had zero problems, as I know what I am doing, know what I want, and know what to pay for on such items. Dealing in person seems to be the key. So do get a friend or club member (Offer them lunch - Lots of great lunch places in Seattle, that's for sure!) to go check the instrument out for you, or request lots of high res pictures of it at all angles. Then you stand a much better chance of not being disappointed when the bass you paid cash (Money orders are same as cash) for arrives. It is more than slightly possible they improved their customer service from when I was dealing with them a decade ago, as word of mouth started becoming more and more important on the Web with forums becoming more popular for talking about basses and those places selling them. Still, it is always best to play it carefully and end up happy about what you've bought, so do what you believe is right for you. That is all I am trying to say here.

I live close enough to BassNW to give it a visit. In fact, I picked up my Distillate from them. I was hoping that the original owner/current owner would chime in and talk about the bass.

I know the folks at BassNW pretty well (been a customer for 17? years), and they aren't on commission.

Not disagreeing that people sometimes make mistakes.

And if you're in the neighborhood, ring me up-- I work a block away.

I've only been there once,but found the owner and employees to be friendly and familiar w/any questions I had about Alembics.I thought some of their pricing was a little high ,but not overly so (room to dicker),while other more common basses could be had at good prices.Considering the huge inventory in one spot,and the wide range of basses from inexspensive to boutique,it's worth a visit.Make an offer(you can always use the club as a sounding board on the price).

I bought my Series Distillate from Evan(Bass Northwest) and I was extremely satisfied!!!!!!! (See Chalie's Distillate) I would not hesitate (IMHO).
If I had the cash, I'd get it...no hesitation!

Well, it is good that some trusted club members have good things to say about Bass NW these days. Maybe the guy I was dealing with a decade ago was just a jerk that was not kept long. I generally do find their prices high for somethings, but I have also over the years seen some decent deals listed on their pages. I, personally, like dealing with individuals (low to no overhead) anymore when I am looking to buy something. However, if they had something I really wanted bad, I'd pay whatever I needed to acquire it. All-in-all these days, I do find it better to be overly cautious than under cautious, but I do listen to opinions of those I have come to trust on posting here. So I may be swayed to do some business with them at a later date. Right now there is standing room only in my music room, so . . . .

I went to Bass NW again back in August with a friend. We asked to play some basses - the guy we talked to (maybe the/one of the owners?) was more than accommodating. Let us play some medium range stuff (Waterstone 8-string, fretless Roscoe SKB standard, a used Alembic) with no hesitation. In fact, when my friend started busting out some Word of Mouth Jaco stuff he sat and watched and then genuinely complemented him - we were both blown away to find out is was the first time he had ever played a fretless! I ended up buying a 3Leaf GR-2 envelope filter pedal - handmade in the Seattle area - I later had it autographed by Bootsy Collins!

I think they have a good return policy, if I remember well you can buy the bass and trying it for about 3 days and return it paying just shipping cost. Now I know that there are stores that accept returns up to a month, but if I sell used expensive basses online without knowing the buyer at all, I think it's fair.
