Alleged Alembic Parts Sold On eBay
« on: February 24, 2016, 09:08:32 AM »
I saw this dual stacked potentiometer offered on ebay as an  Alembic part.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/1979-ALEMBIC-STYLE-BASS-GUITAR-250k-100k-CONCENTRIC-POT-RARE-OLD-VINTAGE-PARTS-/182027275406?hash=item2a61abcc8e:g:h90AAOSwWTRWxKHS

I sent the seller this  friendly inquiry;

What makes you think this is an Alembic part ?

The seller responded with this not so friendly response !

This part was for in an Alembic labeled drawer at Valley Sound(1967) in N.Hollywood CA ..most of the other potentiometers were labeled Alembic ( all of which I sold)..this is one of the few that where not ...I change the title description around so that you would not call the police on me ...I am selling really rare cool guitar parts that always sell and are just the perfect parts for someone building a cool bass guitar ...this is exactly the very same style parts if not the real deal part from Alembic used on some of there instruments . Is there anything else you need ?

I have never seen Alembic use a dual CONCENTRIC  potentiometer in any circuit !
Am I mistaken ?   Is this item incorrectly described ON eBay by the seller?

I'm more puzzled by the year reference - Valley Sound(1967).

To the best of my knowledge, Alembic officially started as a business in 1969 using that name.

If that is accurate, how could this guy be selling Alembic parts in 1967?

That doesn't look like any stacked pot I've ever seen used by Alembic. I'm not even sure it is vintage and was likely just thrown in some parts drawer with other stuff it has no relationship to.

I thought the same thing, until I reread it. The two-pot was in a drawer marked Alembic that was located at Valley Sound. Every repair geek I know has tons of drawers with crap in 'em.

Sounds legit to me. Wanna buy an Alembic bridge?

Speak for yourself. I've always preferred baby food jars, mayonnaise jars and egg cartons.

Question of curiosity.  How many people go looking on eBay for new or used Alembic potentiometers?  I would think a quick call to the factory would get better results of finding the exact part needed.  I do admit I have seen some auctions on eBay for used Alembic parts that have put a smile on my face.  Gee, at the prices asked, it makes me want to 'part-out' all my basses and retire . . .

Thomas,        Out of curiosity I often check ebay with the search word Alembic.   ( actually very often ) ____I find all kinds of interesting items in the process including the  bogus ones !   Thankfully here at the forum we can share our adventures in cyberspace and laugh a little together.

I've kind of quit looking for Alembic stuff, as frankly, I have too much now - As if one could own too much Alembic stuff, eh?!  It costs nothin to look, and takes up zero room, too.  So I do still look every once in a while . . .  I'd look more often if I could disable the buy button on my computer.

I like to restore AMPEX /MCI/ STUDER/ OTARI  studio reel to reel machines as well as old SOUNDCRAFT desks/ mixers.
As a result my storage issue is now dictating  Hesitation Blues  on that  BUY BUTTON .  My  senior management  agent tells me  NO more stuff !    LOL !
