The Bluebird 5 at Owl Farm
« on: June 16, 2007, 03:05:23 PM »
I was fortunate enough to attend a barbeque last Sunday at Owl Farm, Hunter Thompson's ranch in Woody Creek, Colorado.  The MC was Jimmy Ibbotson from the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band.  He had different musicians taking turns on and off stage, with the 5 onstage at any time being called The BlueBird 5.  Here's a shot of your's truly with Jimmy on flute.  Anyone recognize the other guitar player?

Looks like Tommy Chong to me.

And if so,
What was the tune that he was singing?

But playing with Jim Ibbotson is pretty cool!

And I'm guessing that the car behind the stage is there just in case Homeland Security shows up and you need to depart in a hasty fashion.

It is indeed Tommy, and since you've posted I can't proclaim Dave's not here.  LOL

I believe this shot was taken during Summertime.  Tommy likes the blues.

He told me he doesn't play much these days.  He gave away most of his guitars and now is into collecting cars.  By the way, as opposed to some other famous people I've had the chance to hang with, Tommy is really down to earth.  Just a great guy, very easy going, bright and insightful, especially when discussing his sojourn through the federal criminal justice system.

Bill,

Gotta ask. How'd Tommy like the inlays?

Jonathan:

I think he liked them.  He held my guitar, checked out the inlays and said is this for me?  I laughed and said no, he said are you sure you don't want to give it to me?  We went around like that a couple of times, all lighthearted.  As you might expect, this being a NORML legal seminar, the inlays were very popular.  (For those who don't know, NORML = National Organization for Reform of Marijuana Laws).

I am assuming this is the same Owl Creek farm of Hunter S. Thompson featured as uncle Duke in the Donnesbury comic strip,as well as the author that lived with the Hells Angels and lived to write a very good book about his experences.
Chuck
By the way Hunter died in 2005 by a self?,infickted gunshot to the head.

Fear & Loathing with Alembic Electronics.  You are correct - the very same Hunter S. Thompson, a.k.a. Dr. Gonzo hisself, Uncle Duke's alter-ego.  Ahhhh!  The bats...the bats...they're everywhere!!!!

I can't vouch the for the veracity of this, but I once read that way back when, Tommy once played lead guitar in a band whose rhythm player was one J. Marshall Hendrix.
