Slender taper necks
« on: December 22, 2023, 12:30:26 PM »
Quick question:  Does anybody here have experience with Alembic slender taper (1.5"nut) necks and other manufacturers' short/narrow neck profiles?  I'd be curious to hear any thoughts on how similar the slender taper necks are to something like a Gibson EB-0 or a Fender Music Master bass.  Or, to anything I'd be likely to find in-store somewhere like Guitar Center.

I've been thinking about what kind of strings to have my upcoming custom build set up with.  I grabbed my '69 EB-0 the other day to get reacquainted with the DR flats I have on it, and it struck me just how effortless that neck is to play.  It got me rethinking (while there's still time) whether to change the specs for the custom to a narrower nut.  I'm already going for the lightest build and shorted reach possible.  My original thought was to keep the string spacing close to what I have on my Spoilers so the feel would be similar, but now I'm thinking it would make sense also to go for the most relaxed left hand posture I can as well.  Of course, being in the middle of the East Coast I have no dealers within a day's drive to actually get my hands on a Brown Bass.

My advise is to not always go with the familiar .. I have had virtually every neck profile and scale of Alembics and others. If you are staying 4 string I can say the brown bass is a dream to play as far as comfort and speed. That said, whatever chances you have to try as many as you can, do so. Each variation has qualities that may appeal.
I for one am most comfortable with medium scale. I love the BB but they don't do 5's anymore. Phil L neck specs are great. My last custom is an example. One can really fly on it.
So explore and talk to Mica. She knows!

Thanks for the suggestions.  I've also been very much at home with medium scale, but there are times when my shoulder would be happy with even a little bit less reach.  That combined with needing less weight on my shoulder is what led to the custom build.  I want this to be the bass I'm still playing at Phil's age.

What were the neck specs on your last custom?

For my 6 string 1.90 at the nut and 3.127 at the 25th  Same as Phil's 32 scale 6 Series 2.

And I thought my 6 string was fairly extreme, but it's 0.1 wider at the nut than Danno's and about 0.15 at the end of the fingerboard. I was shooting for Spoiler spacing at the bridge and narrower than Epic spacing at the nut. My fingers aren't too big, and we probably could have gone that bit narrower at the bridge.

My 6 string Spoiler with the MOP Dragon is 2" at the nut and 3" at the 24th. Still for sale.

I can't speak to neck similarities with Gibson basses as I have never played any. I have Comfort and Classic tapers on my current basses.

My long scales have Comfort taper . It has been  long time since I've done any measurements but I recall the comfort taper being very close to the width and string spacing I have on my 1976 Jazz Bass. This is why I went with the Comfort taper on my long scale basses since I was coming from the JB and wanted to keep a similar feel.

My small body short scales have Classic tapers. I had Series I small body bass with the Slender taper for a short bit and it wasn't for me. My Brown Bass which was my main bass for years is pre-2006 and came with the Classic taper. For me that feels more comfortable. It is what I have on my newer Series I as well.

Where on the East Coast are you? There might be a club member within a reasonable distance who has an instrument you could try out.
