Something else to consider is the particular strap your using.
Moody and Levy make some very expensive, but excellent, straps... and they can literally make a bass seem MUCH lighter than other straps. I've found that it varies from person to person (and bass to bass), though. You have to experiment with different straps on different basses. My Moody strap works great on the Alembic Elan 5, but not so well on my short-scale Stanley bass. However, the Levy works great on my short scale. If you experiment around, I believe you can get comfortable with just about any bass/weight. The only thing that is difficult to overcome is neck-dive... but that's not a problem on this bass.
I have a friend (Brady Muckelroy) who makes very light basses on purpose. He just built a 4 lb. 15 oz. bass. Very impressive for the weight... but it comes at a cost (sound-wise). A Europa with Cocobolo on Mahogany is a great choice of woods... far from light-weight, but an excellent sound.
The main thing is to play the bass that's right for you, Frank. And it sounds like the Smith bass is working for you, my friend.
Peace,
Bryan
