gottalove GC.  i think they're slipping further into darkness lately.  i was in  the one on colorado blvd here in the mile high yesterday.  customers lined up at checkout.  boxes stacked everywhere.  about 3 out of tune guit@rs being played at high volume.  customers wandering around looking for help.  i was trying to buy a rack. not a store member in sight.  wandered around for about 30 minutes.  finally saw a guy with a GC shirt and a badge.  try to ask him a question.  turns out he doesn't work there.  he's a vendor and doesn't know nothing.  i see that a lot lately

it's early.  maybe i should go back to bed.
Been down...now i'm out!

Rick would've been 80 years old come next Sunday, the 30th. From what I see and read, his son Ethan (and possibly a daughter?) are on a Board of Directors that oversees the continuing operation of Renaissance/Turner Guitars. Glad to see they stuck it out. That had to be a tough first year over there. I do think it's hurt the price of the guitars (and basses) on the secondhand market... maybe there's a perception that they are 'orphaned' instruments. I don't think that's the case, but sometimes perception makes a reality. I just watched a fully-equipped Electroline 5-string sell for $1550. Nice one. Backstrapped headstock, pretty finish, hardshell case... at used 7ender price.

The Electroline and Renaissance basses are going for very reasonable prices. The model ones on the other hand are rare enough that from what I’ve seen recently the asking prices are almost the cost of a new one. Which brings up a question…We all know that the prices of used Alembic basses have gone through the roof. Since these are really the majority of basses in which I’m interested, I really don’t know what’s happened recently with other brands. Do those of you in who check out a broader range of basses than I do know what the market is like for other high end used instruments? Have they been hit with their own equivalent of Alemiflation? or have prices remained at levels below that of a good used car?

Yes and no. Depends on the make. Rickenbackers used went up but have recently been more of a hard sell, plus new supply is starting to keep up with demand somewhat. Vintage 4001's are at top dollar but sales are slow for these fine instruments. Many folks are still asking top dollar for higher end fenders, but I don't think they are selling all that well at those prices. Vintage Gibson bass guitars are not selling well and prices are coming down. Rare old Musicman and BC Rich are still at high prices (think 5K for a 1976 Stingray) but are not selling well.

Like it or not, we are in a recession. Working musicians are having a hard time. Those just starting out playing are thinking twice about how much they spend, and hobbyists are being stingy with dwindling dollars. Alembic, being at the high end of the market, are still going for a lot of money to those who either have money, or to those who want to realize a lifelong dream (many whom are older).
