Brass Bridge Block hole sizes
« on: March 06, 2021, 04:21:18 PM »
Hi friends,

I've just acquired an 81 S1 8-string and in attempting to get the bridge height equal on both sides, I discovered that the reason the G string side is able to go lower is that there's a larger hole in the brass block underneath the bridge on the G string side than there is on the E string side. Is this commonly done on Series basses or is it more likely that the previous owner had one side drilled wider in order to allow the nut on the underside of the bridge to go inside the brass block to facilitate a lower bridge setting?

Any insight is appreciated.

The bass is awesome, btw!

Hey Dave,

Congrats on the new 8-string monster!  I'm going to guess that mod was done by the previous owner, though it could have happened at HQ during the initial setup.  I don't think they come that way, but I could be wrong.  It's a deep threaded hole for the bridge mounting screws so if you are bumping into the block on the E-string side you could certainly do the same thing there.

Enjoy that thing!

Thanks, Jimmy for the insight. I have an appt w/ my luthier for next week to do the mod. Btw, big fan here. Saw you at Rams Head in Annapolis, MD w/ Allan a few times. Always inspirational!
