Hi Mica and everybody.

Some advice desperately needed please!

I have a pair of MXY 56 pickup set with three controls modules, ready to put into a custom bass, but I am just checking for a bit of urgent advice, please.

I am using a Switchcraft output jack, but NOT the big one, and not the black plastic one.

It is a  Switchcraft #13 1/4 inch  jack
1/4" female. Mono 2-Conductor Input Jack, Isolated Make Circuit. Four terminals
This socket is mono, and also has an independent, isolated switching system (a 'MAKE' circuit) when the jack is inserted.

Am I correct in saying that:
1. The black lead from the new battery connector, and the dark grey lead from the controls, should both be soldered to the earth point on the jack socket.
2. The purple (violets) lead from the controls goes to the TIP connection on the jack socket.
3. The red lead from the battery connector goes to one side of the switched contact on the jack socket, and the red/white striped cable from the controls goes to the other switched contact on the socket.

Also, do I need to put a capacitor in, as I have seen this in some photos.

Thank you, David

Hi David,
Yes, you can use the Switchcraft "LITTLE-JAX" type 13 with the isolated MAKE circuit.
Your color codes are correct.

You can wire it up without the capacitor and the circuit will function, for testing.
Would suggest you install the capacitor before delivery as it reduces high-frequency noise.
Recommend 2.2 nF (.0022 uF) capacitor value.

If “rjw” is who I think it is, it’s downright criminal that he is described as a “junior member”!  Moder Dave, work your magic!

If I’m wrong, in the immortal words of Emily Litella, “never mind”.

Bill, tgo

Yes, it's that rjw. But the member status is for the number of posts, and he doesn't really want to be a moderator  ;D
I have a quick question though - you said 3 control modules. Do you have 2 volumes and a filter or 1 volume, 1pan, 1 filter?

Hi Mica and Ron.

I tested the pickups simply by adding a battery, and plugging it into my Ampeg amp from my workbench. (no guitar body, neck or strings, just a light tapping on the pickups!) All seemed fine.

The 3 pots in my set all have an ink stamped number, 9137 on them. which I presume MAY be the serial number of the complete set?

My two MXY-56 pickups plug into controls 1 & 2 of the three controls as follows:
1. On the first circuit board is says Alembic 170-043 and on the pot itself, it says Alembic 475-022 40-901. There is nothing but the pot and the connectors on this board.
2. The second control's circuit board has no writing that is discernible on it, but it has just the pot and a few capacitors and resistors on it. The pot is marked 475-022 40-901.
3. The third circuit board has an IC, several resistors and capacitors, and a variable resistor. The pot itself is marked 475-021 40-901* (last number not decipherable as it's covered by a rivet)

So...

Please can you give me any idea of:
a) the date of manufacture?
b) What set the controls actually are?
c) And if I need a capacitor across the input jack, I now have the value but what type of capacitor please? (if it matters!)

And finally, do you adopt 66yr old youngsters like me? I want to come and live with you, you are all so helpful!

Thank you!

9137 is the date date: made in the 37th week of 1991.

You have 2 volumes (the 475-022 pots) and one filter (the 475-021 pot).

In this system you will NOT add the capacitor on the jack. That's only for the bass and treble systems.

So many adopted siblings I have :)
