Assuming; W. Diamondback where you are, Ed. That's a little guy. Interestingly, I'm that guy here. I learned to identify the dangerous ones indigenous to this part of Virginia at a young age, and how to manage them. It got me over any fear of them, so when I spot one that isn't, immediately the curiosity turns to a game of "what species is it?".

I haven't seen the first rattlesnake this year, in spite of an unusually dry spring and summer. (the only ones we have here are two variations of timber rattlesnakes... the ones in higher elevations tend to have less of a pattern, but same snake. They're generally mild-tempered... if you don't mess with them they will ignore you) I have seen two small copperheads, quite the opposite. Very ill-tempered and will bite at the slightest provocation. They weren't near anywhere that I thought posed a threat, so I didn't bother moving them. Yesterday an unusual sight, a juvenile mole kingsnake. Somewhere way back in the Scenery Thread (maybe?) is a very colorful Eastern hognose snake I spotted one time.
