This was posted on the rukind site as part of a discussion about the Grateful Dead archives at U.C. Santa Cruz.  It's a list of each player's equipment, dated 1973.  Notice Garcia's equipment includes "Alembic custom".  Given the year, I would assume the reference was most likely to Wolf.

Seems like I remember reading somewhere in here that he had #72-13 as well, at least for a time. As you say, given the 1973 date, 25/Wolf-to-be should have been done. (?)

Looking at Gregory.... 

72-17, the 32" scale Bass VI-style one with the adjustable mute made for Jack Cassidy, is the last definitive 1972 I have in the list I've been putting together. McVie's Short Scale 73-27 is the earliest 1973 I've recorded.

I guess it could go either way.

I wonder whether #25 even has the serial number left on the headstock after Irwin changed things up.

I'd actually like to know too. Also never seen a #24 or #26 surface to know their year. 

Just knowing what I do about instrument building and small shops in general, I'm guessing things didn't necessarily always get completed in the order in which they got started. 

For example, extreme case but Phil's bass #00008 is stamped 1974 production. Took a couple years to finish that crazy thing. It evidently wasn't ready yet when this archive note was prepared as the 'Alembic Custom Quadraphonic Guild-bodied bass' is listed. (now that's mouthful...)
