Can't say that I have... kinda' hope that one doesn't catch on. I have done a few conversions, of [some-might-say] an upcycling outcome.


At least two rather inexpensive archtop guitars got turned into a mandocello and octave mandolin. I converted a budget Regal resonator guitar to an 8-string once. We upgraded the cone and spider too. Well, all the guts really... tailpiece, nut, tuners. Pretty much took the husk and used it as the chassis for a build.


Too many banjos to remember.


But nope... never thought about a DIY harp guitar.

I'd seen cleating using thread through the crack, but I love the winch idea, I know I'll use that one day...

I'm about 83.7% sure I've seen Dan Erlewine use something like that in one of his vids.  I neve cease to be amazed at the ingenuity of all you ax mechanics!

I'd totally be in the tall grass without Ward, especially in situations like that one. We hang out either at his shop or mine at least once a month, or sometimes meet-up in town, catch up and talk a little shop.

Many times (like this bass for example) I know what needs to happen, just not how to effect it. He's just got so much experience... I'm lucky to have a coach.

Wish I had a coach in jewelry repair; would probably save me a lot of time, but i eventually figure it out...

But did you use drywall screws like that guy?

I got one of our banjos back for a head replacement and setup, and while replacing the head I spotted a minor delamination starting in the shell. Nothing a little squirt of Titebond Extend and a good squeeze overnight won't fix. Under warranty of course. 

#96-22 is 30 years old, and still with its original owner. Quite a few of them are, but this one makes us especially proud. I'll post a couple of the fully assembled, reanimated instrument later. 

#96-22 is going back tomorrow. I had one of my test-pilots check it out yesterday and gave it the all-clear.

This time ol' 22 got a new Remo "Renaissance" head installed, and the aforementioned repair to the shell. Other than that, just some minor setup, a little tweak to the truss-rod and a little shine-up. It's got some wear, but this banjo has been played. Just like we meant for it to.

I tried to capture the walnut best I could here... it's really aged nice. As far as we know, (or remember) there are only three walnut Honeytone banjos. This one also has abalone inlay, all designed and cut by me. I cheated on the dots... they were pre-cut. The rest was done the hard way. I was fascinated by torches at the time, and we did a couple similar ones. This is by far the more complex one.
