My Europa Serial Number is 91U6857 - I'm looking for the manufacturing wood specs, first registration date, and whether the 4x1 tuning gear spec was custom-unique or standard in 91 basses.

Hi Randy, welcome to the club.

That's a nice looking Europa.  Built in '91 with what looks like a Bird's-eye Maple top.  I believe the 4+1 tuner arrangement is standard for the 5-string version. 

Serial number lookup can take some time so be patient and you may eventually get all the details.

I removed both back plates to confirm the serial number and replace the battery. I purchased this beauty in March 2001.

Looking good!  What's the deal with the nut, did you put that felt there?  Should be an adjustable brass nut under that, right?  Just curious.

I can just make out the bottoms of the outer adjustment screws in that picture. I can't recall seeing anything like that before.

For those asking about the felt on the nut ...

One of the previous owners of the bass decided to file the string openings - unfortunately, they did them just a smidgen too much; as such, the strings rattled in the slots and the tuning was "suspect".

Adding a felt strip made up the gap difference and it also stabilized the strings in the nut. The felt also provides some cushion so that the strings don't wear down any more of the nut material. I change the felt strip about every year, with no additional issues. It's worked well for about 5 years and is totally playable.

Nothing more sinister than that.
