What Is Going On Here?

Down at the Hollywood, CA Guitar Center is an Orion 5-string with the most unusual finish.  Anyone care to guess what  / how it was done?  No serial # in the cavity (kudos to GC for removing the cover) and the truss rod cover is finished in black so almost impossible to read it.  Never seen it here before.

I believe that is this bass. Or possibly a twin?

If so, it's an overexposed picture of a lacewood top, and that bass is an unusual short-scale Orion. Look close and call it.

*interestingly still in Hollyweird.

Very Interesting!  The original reverb also has the over-exposure of the bass in the case.  The photos in the stand look like a different bass!  I wonder if that is indeed how the finish reacts to light.

An overexposed finish often results in a distorted tone.
