Excellent!

Peter (who originally meant to be a bass player - but discovered if you go with guitar, it's easier to play with yourself.......)

Back in '84 the kid playing bass asked me to change his strings on a road trip; I did.
Then he got pissed because I'd thrown the old, corroded ones (never seen anyone sweat onstage like this guy; doing a set-up on it was the hardest, most disgusting instrument work I've ever done - and my Duolian had been in a storage unit with bugs & rodents for years when I got it); said he was going to boil them and use them again.

First time I'd ever heard anyone but a high school kid talk about boiling strings.  Well, he wasn't that far from it; 21.

Is this really a thing among actual players & I've just led a sheltered life?

Peter (who is reminded of a Guitar Player interview with a Harvey - either Mandel or Brooks; it's been a few decades - saying he only changed them when they broke; then he'd rub the new ones with BBQ sauce to deaden them.......)

i get another month's life outta my RS66's with a good boiling.  doesn't work for the SII, tho.  so its old strings are hand-me-downs for the lower echelons.

doesn't work with boomers (sorry, jimmy).

been doing that since '75 or so.  i thought all the cheapskates did it.

cheers!

OK, I guess it's a thing; before the above-referenced episode until this post, the last I'd heard of it was about '73 (and then it tended to be the same guys who wouldn't cut off extra string string because it would kill the tone......).
And cheapskates, sure - but this was a full-time pro in one of the 3 biggest acts on the Midwest university-town club circuit.  It just never crossed my mind to save them.

I boiled strings in my teens.   Hardly no income and chasing that Entwistle/ Squire high-end zing!

These days mellow works well.
