I have been trying to find the sound that john mcvie (my hero)is getting in his bass solo Chains on the fleetwood mac cd live in boston. my gear is a elan plus (see my post in history request dated july 27 2006). the stack is ampeg svt 3 pro with ampeg classic 4-10 and a classic 1-15 any help out there would be worshiped. thanks chuck

Agreed - most, if not all of his work is on FLATWOUND stings.

Also - I would keep the filter turned to lower cutoff frequencies, the 3-position switches in the middle (flat) position, and experiment with the Q switch (depending on your strings).

Still, with an Elan, the big, round sound that you are seeking will be more illusive since the Maple body gives you a fairly bright sound to start with. I would guess you'd want to play more towards the fingerboard than the bridge, and favor the neck pickup too.

Wandering a bit off topic ..
Although I never really cared much for the Buckingham version of Fleetwood Mac, I loved what I refer to as the middle period with Kirwan, Spencer and Welch. The albums I have from that period are Kiln House, Future Games and Bare Trees. Wonderful guitar work and song writing.

Agreed, Dave. FG and BT are really underappreciated albums. Gorgeous guitar sounds aplenty. I gotta dig out those LPs...

Also, on Mystery to Me (not one of Mac's better records) there is a stone cold killer cover of the Yardbirds' For Your Love.

I don't have Mystery To Me and haven't listened to it and ages, but my recollection is that, like you, I didn't think that overall it was as good as FG and BT, but that there was some interesting things on it.

I agree with Dave on the Buckingham/Nicks version. My favorite is the first line up with Peter Green. John's work with John Mayall is also very good.

the first lineup with peter green was AWESOME... been listeining peter greens solo albums... great guitar work
