Also - I would keep the filter turned to lower cutoff frequencies, the 3-position switches in the middle (flat) position, and experiment with the Q switch (depending on your strings).
Still, with an Elan, the big, round sound that you are seeking will be more illusive since the Maple body gives you a fairly bright sound to start with. I would guess you'd want to play more towards the fingerboard than the bridge, and favor the neck pickup too.
