Swapping electronics between my Series I and II basses?
« on: February 01, 2026, 12:55:49 PM »
I have a series I Burl redwood 5 string Europa and a Series II Koa 4 string Short scale bass.
Apart from the shorty one having a master volume and the pickup selector switch in the lower horn.
Is there any reason why I couldn't swap the electronics over between the two basses?

I understand from the forum that the series basses are calibrated before being shipped out, so will changing them over have a significance on the success of this operation?

I'd like to try to do it in a non destructive way first to test how effective the change from series I to II would be before doing anything permanent.

What do you think?

My understanding is that Ron's hand-tuned final calibration is unique to each instrument.  The mass and location of your brass hardware, the specific windings and location of the pickups, etc, all have an effect on his final hum-cancelling tweak.  So there is a chance that swapping cards and/or wiring harnesses between your S-I and S-II could introduce some noise issues.

That said, apart from that last tweak the components should be interchangeable.  A quick experiment would be to move the preamp card from one to another and see what happens.  Any increase in noise and hum?

Let us know what you discover.
