It is pretty.  I am very slightly skeptical about it being Coco Bolo on top.  When I saw it, I had a deja vu about another BassNW instrument that they AND I thought was coco bolo (it's at http://www.bassnw.com/Special%20Order%20Basses/Basses/Alembic/alembic_series_II_cocobolo_5_st.htm ).

Mica set me straight on the other bass - It's Ziricote.  This one's top looks a little like the other one did.  What do our wood experts think?

I used to own that Ziricote Series II 5 string.  When I put the bass up for consignment with Bass NW, I immediately noticed that they listed the top wood as Coco Bolo.  I informed them of the mistake and they quickly updated their website.  Interestingly though, in their custom gallery, they used the description saying it was Coco Bolo.  I'd definitely just chalk it up as a little mistake as the people at Bass NW have always been stand up guys and a pleasure to deal with.

Best Wishes,
Bones

Yeah, that's Ziricote. I've sent an email to Evan so he knows about the error. It's not usual to see a bass with that top, so it's understandable.

Bones - I presume the neck laminates are not bubinga, too, but purpleheart?

A beaut. I hope you traded up for happy reasons rather than having to sell because of unhappy ones.

eff,

Yes it was the standard purpleheart neck laminates.  It was a great sounding bass but the weighting, 1st position extention and neck diving issues were significant problems for me.  I bought the bass used and figured that if I was going to have so much money invested in an instrument, I better dang well love it.  Thus I sold it and convinced my wife that I needed to have a custom Alembic built for me.  I took the the best features of the three Alembics I had previously owned and had a 5 string Europa with Series I electronics and a Coco Bolo top made.  I've owned it for a little over a year and needless to say am very happy.  I hope the person that bought the Ziricote 5 enjoys the bass very much.

Bones - your reasoning seems to be right on target. Now I see why every time someone asks about a bass hanging in a store that Mica encourages people to try it out before buying, and to try different Alembics before trying to build a custom order with all kinds of options.

Ziricote looks like a really unique top wood.

Was there enough room in the Europa shape for Series electronics or did they have to enlarge the body to get them to fit?

eff,

Yes they had to slightly modify the standard Europa body to fit the Series I electronics.  However, IMO it's hardly noticable.

Best Wishes,
