A rare band rehearsal
« on: July 15, 2021, 01:02:51 AM »
I got offered a dep gig in a Marley Tribute band on Tuesday evening, and a rehearsal with them yesterday evening. I took my maple Europa 5 which is my main reggae bass.
It's great to play with other musicians again after such a long break. Only downside was the rehearsal room had an Ashdown head into two Trace Elliot cabs. Two of my least favourite bass rig items together, and really i didn't like the sound at all.
Next rehearsal I will take my alembic rack or mesa boogie head and barefaced big baby II cab and that will give me the sound i'm used to.
I have a gig with them at the end of this month, so that will be when i get the big toys out.

Ah! the perennial rehearsal room Ashdown conundrum!.  I loathe these amps as, no matter what I do with my bass controls, the amp always sounds muddy. This isn't helped by the usually well abused speaker cabs they provide. I'm lucky that my main band rents our own space in a remote farm building so we can leave our own kit in there for rehearsals - my rehearsal rig is currently a Markbass 12" traveller cab and MB LM800 - sounds great with an Alembic.  Sadly my blues band use a studio in edinburgh that is all ashdown so I'll be taking my LM800 along tonight to at least give the Alembic tone a chance.

Regardless of the poor sonic rewards from the amp's shortcoming, I sure am glad to hear/read about our Alembic pals getting back to playing across the water. Aside from the simple joy of playing music, the comraderie and fellowship with my bandmates has been a welcome return here.

I had two rehearsals yesterday, the first was with my Brazillian jazz band, classico in hand and the othe was with my main reggae band using my black europa 5. Both went really well and i was pleasantly surprised how much my intonation on the upright has improved since last year. Hope it holds out next week on my first full db gig.

Awesome, Vince! It is filling my heart with joy hearing about everyone getting to rehearse and (gasp!) even play gigs again!

Yes Mica having the opportunity to do that, and with these basses it's what makes our world go round.
In fact on 30th I will be on the main stage at Camp Bestival 2021 which is one of the larger music festivals over here and that is just the right gig for a series bass. :-)

There's a wrong gig for a Series bass?

Hi Peter, in my view yes but you only usually find that out when you get there. By that i mean, those gigs where you are provided with a backline and the rig sounds awful. There is nothing so demoralising and distracting as when you are playing a high end bass through a horrid sounding bass rig and can’t hear the sound you want. I have done that far too many times, but now when those cases arise i tend not to use the rig and go direct to DI and just use a stage monitor. Occasionally i have had the bass cabs moved to the other side of the drum kit because the guys on that side still want to hear it.

I just did a gig with an Eden backline: WT900 and 2x10 and 2x12 cabs. It sounded really horrible. I was surprised. But, it made load in and load out a lot easier and probably save me some gas, as it was a 700 mile round trip.

I'm surprised the Eden stuff didn't work out Edwin. Mike Pisanek who used to post here years ago had a pair of 210s that he put his F1X and QSC power amp through and the tone was fantastic.  I tried my old Eden Navigator pre and QSC through the same speakers and it sounded great too.

Maybe you experienced the tired, worn out old house amp syndrome.

my last gig was an nice Markbass rig and the band before us (Selecter), their bassie told me the 1x15 was blown. He was right it was crackling all night. thankfully they mic'd up one of the 4x10 cab speakers along with the Di.
