Funny Stage Banter
« on: March 19, 2021, 01:37:44 PM »
Another site I frequent had a thread about stage banter, announcements, etc.  One person posted the following, which had me spitting up my OJ.  It occurred at a U2 concert.

Bono asked the audience for silence.  When a hush settled over the venue, Bono began to slowly clap his hands.   He told the silent audience that each time he clapped, a child died in Africa.  To which a lone voice in the audience cried out "well stop clapping then!"

hehehehe

We all love our bandleader/frontman Josh like a brother, but it is sometimes hard to tell what direction his stage banter will take... ranges from hilarious to cringeworthy. Often in the same breath.

One of our bands was a "Host Band" for a month at a local college bar - we Hosted their Open Jam night.  This meant we started and ended the night with longer sets than the regular jammers.

This was also the time when our band also had some air play on a local station for one of our originals. It was exciting - we thought we were special  ::)

It also was awkward - I remember a couple times in between songs I felt compelled to 'banter' with the audience.... There was some pretty amazingly stupid things that came out of my mouth.   I refuse to repeat any of it here because I am trying to forget it ever happened.   :-[

Back in the 70's I played in a group where both guitar players had been in acts for years. Once you got them started they could do the stage jokes/banter for hours on end and were good at it. During the 80's I played in a group where the front person was a salesman and was a natural stage talker. However, he never stopped off stage either! We would be hitting the road at 5am for a weekend of gigs and he would be talking right until we got back into town past midnight 2 days later.

It's a real treat to watch someone who is very comfortable in that role to work as a frontperson. (I am not that guy, but I know when I see it). I played in a John Prine tribute band a couple times a year called "Souvenirs", the frontman had been a television actor for years... played as an extra/support cast on just about every 70's and 80's sitcom there was. He was brilliant behind a microphone. Mediocre guitar player, okay singer, still better than me on both counts. But he was absolutely genius with delivery. Smart, funny, and his comedic timing was perfect. I tried and tried to do what he did. I don't think he had to try.
