2021 Resolutions?
« on: January 01, 2021, 10:01:46 AM »
Anybody make any? Music related? Otherwise?

Mostly, mine are really longer-term goals... some of which may happen within this calendar year.

I could try to put on a few pounds.  :P

I don't make resolutions as they seem to be seen as giving up bad habits etc. I tend to set goals that push me and that  focusses me enough. So here are two of my music related goals for 2021. Play a full gig on double bass (i am still in the painful left hand and not enough stamina)', and perform a Stanley Clarke/Return to Forever gig. Both extremely challenging, though the hardest is the second since with jazz based gigs in my area paying a lot less than other gigs, it will be a challenge to get musicians who are willing to do it without music scores and for low pay. I may have to guarantee them their normal fee and hope i get enough through the door to recover my outlay.  If anyone has scores for any of the RTF/Clarke stuff or know where i can find it that would be a great help.

I think we all want to get back playing live - that is more of a hope than a resolution but I am making it fully optimistic, so therefore it becomes a resolution.

As i only really hear alembics played live by Stanley Clarke, Geepee and myself, i would like to get to more gigs where alembic basses and guitars are being played. So if any UK owners are doing public gigs using your alembics please post them in the forum.

I signed up for Bass Education, Damian Erskine's educational website. I will never become a jazz player, but I am trying to improve as best I can - learning the notes on the fretboard better (especially between the 6th-11th frets) is still one of my goals, and I'm realizing that trying to read some music (working on The Funkmasters: The Great James Brown Rhythm Sections by Allan "Dr. Licks" Slutsky & Chuck Silverman right now) and even write out charts for songs is going to help.

A few things I have in mind, not in any particular order or priority;

1.) Spend more time with my parents and a nephew who lives with them. I'm not finished frustrating them, and just getting started good corrupting the knucklehead. Seriously, as I myself age, I am aware there are fewer days ahead than behind, and we just never know. On the other hand, my Granny will be 100 years old in Spring. How'd she do that?!

2.) By January 1st 2022, have a Big Red X on the calendar denoting my last official day of public service. Maybe it's 2024 before the departure happens, but it is time to plan the exit, put things in order and get on to Chapter 3 of Greg's Book. (I am hoping it's more like Chapter 1 was, except I am a lot smarter now) I also need to remember that Big Red X is not a liscense to be a smartass... save that for the exit interview.

3.) Whether there are gigs or not this year, I'm going to continue to play as much music as I possibly can, while I can, and try to balance the time between bass and guitar. (by golly, I can play one of those idiot-things if I work at it!) With the lack of paying jobs last season, I really focused on things I wouldn't have here in my little practice space, and it's paid off in ways I never imagined. Here I am almost 52, still learning new things. Weird-o-rama.

4.) I was serious about that weight thing. I need to get a little more muscle mass back, something completely unforeseen that came up after that last operation. I lost almost 100 lbs, and got pretty frail there for a while, then slowly built back up. There's another fusion surgery coming, most likely later this year (it's kinda' up to me, the rockstar neurosurgeon sez) but timetable-wise, Fall of the year works a lot better... much less outside work to be done. One thing all my Docs agree on - I need more meat holding these bones together. Gotta' work on that.

5.) I was a hermit long before the Corona Virus came along. I need to be less of one. I think as a musician I just sorta' gave myself a pass on the weirdness, but I have realized that even I need some degree of interaction with people. It was one thing when it was by choice, and quite another being deprived of the ability to go do the simplest things. So when I can, I will.

6.) Man, I miss my Shop. The 'Real Job' situation has been such this year that I haven't had any time at all to spend in there, but I am hopeful that soon the schedule will straighten out and I can get back to work in there. I have two Alembic-related projects, the Starfire bass and a guitar with Telecaster activators, plus the Hyak scroll-body fretless to complete restoration of, thanks to a complete new-old-stock set of electronics from a Club Member here. There is also a 1930's National Duolian metal-bodied guitar up there, 75% finished. There are three banjos in-progress too. I just need time.

7.) There are at least three dead trees in the yard I need to cut down this year. One, threateningly close to my shop. Ain't big enough to do real damage, but I can save myself some trouble and shingles if I drop it first. Neighbor can burn it in the stove.

That's an awful lot to get done in 364 days... better get busy.

Gregory -
Your #2 resonates with me (that's #2 on your list above....).
I have failed miserably at awaiting an exit interview (mine is a ways off) to voice my "concerns".   I have been called to the corner office several times - yet they still won't fire me?

Which plays into my resolution - Break the "workaholic' mindset, do NOT allow the inept, sloth like behaviors of my unprofessional co-workers get the best of me.  This is incredibly difficult; I overthink things, I have expectations of my co-workers to put in as much effort as I do, to take pride in what we do and to avoid making more work for the next guy.   I also vehemently believe in SPC (Statistical Process Control - data collection - analytical interpretation of said data...  "science" you could call it)  I feel very alone in my passion for data - it IS a valuable tool, only if it is used properly.... The collective "we" at work do NOT care about facts - just point a finger.

In a nutshell I need to embrace that I am NOT a Valued Employee - I am a Labor Unit.
I struggle with facing my own reality - is there a pill for that?

I just wish that earthquakes and corona would be in the past... my country had 2 major earthquakes in 2019 (one in city where I live). Shakings are still happening, all mixed with corona and no gigs... I'm really not in state that I can grab a bass and practice as I want.
The bass player’s function, along with the drums, is to be the engine that drives the car… everything else is merely colours.

Great post/song Hankster!

My 2021 resolution is to break out and become more involved in community.  Online or in real life when this nasty virus lifts some.
The only thing that stays the same is change.

Yeah, our resolution too. We moved to this island in August, and it’s an island with real community, and lots of things to volunteer for, but with the virus lockdown we haven’t been  able to get involved in anything substantive. This is the year!
Live each day like your hair is on fire.

I'm moving in less than two weeks for the first time in 22 years, and I have a lot of instruments I'm really thinking about my continued ownership; they take up space and I mostly play bass these days but what would I really sell? what would I regret selling? it's funny, as a long-ago thread pointed out that I got many of these guitars for free or close to it, but now I have to factor in storage, mainly cases as my new place has fewer closets...ah, this is a rant based on having to edit the last 20+ years and move them...but it is useful, you start to actually look at your stuff...

Richard, that song speaks the truth as it has always been through the ages.

Been Down, I see the wisdom in you thoughts!   :D

Roger/ Richard, I have been blessed to have been employed all year, my wife and I have taken our stimulus checks and are in the process of donating all of it to organizations that resonate with us. One organization is a local one that has a mission statement that has me very excited.  So like you I vow to not only provide monetary support but also physically volunteer my time to help them make our world a better place.
