How About an Alembic Face Mask?
« on: April 30, 2020, 08:26:34 AM »
Mica & team;
If we are going to be wearing face mask for the near future, why don't we do it with style - an Alembic logo face mask!
A friend of mine was sewing mask for friends and she was choosing fabrics with dogs, cats and other patterns and I thought the Alembic logo would look really Neat-O on the mask.
Maybe I can give her an old Alembic shirt or something to use.
Just my thought for today, no politics please, as this forum is a terrific bunch of 'low enders' and guitar folks too, strictly a fashion statement on my part.  8) Thanks.

Sorry to sound like a kiljoy but, unless it was sold with a disclaimer to say it is a novelty or fashion Item, wouldn't it need to comply with some kind of medical standards to be used as a bonafide PPE item?
If not what would the point of buying one in preference to one that complies with medical standards to provide protection from the Covid-19 virus?

You could of course wear one over the top of a proper face mask, that might be cool.

I was thinking about sewing one of my Alembic logo patches onto my employer-supplied mask...

...but a pin might be even easier- https://reverb.com/item/32981097-alembic-color-enamel-logo-pin

Cool idea but the concept of cloth face masks as fashion accessories instead of PPE would not be a good trend. The cloth masks by themselves are better than nothing but don't provide sealed coverage for health security. In hospitals they cover the N95 masks (if they are lucky enough to have them) with cloth masks for an extra layer of protection but mainly to prevent contamination of the limited stock of N95 masks they have. Now if we could get certified N95 masks with an Alembic logo they would at least provide ample health security and be useful for fire season, too, but I can't see that happening either and for good reason, there still are nowhere near the quantity of standard issue N95 masks needed available and the cost would be prohibitive.

Still would like to give a shout out and thanks to those making the cloth masks. At a time when people need any type of protection they can get they have been extremely useful.

Depends on the purpose of the mask.  N95 type masks are for preventing the wearer from getting the virus.  Regular surgical and cloth-type masks are for preventing the wearer from transmitting the virus to others.   Both are far better than nothing for their respective purposes, but the cloth masks are fairly useless for the purpose of protecting the wearer.   Research has already established that people can carry and transmit the virus without displaying any symptoms.  So if you happen to be visiting the Mayo Clinic and all the doctors, nurses, patients and other visitors are ALL wearing masks, and the rule is to wear a mask, PUT ON YOUR DAMN MASK!!!!

I don't know about the proper materials and thickness need to qualify as a true PPE device,  but the final layer could be the Alembic logo.
I have a N95 mask I wear to the store, as I had a couple left over from a drywall project last year.
I see many people in my area with just the thin surgical mask or just a bandana around their face. Take what you can find I guess.  Maybe as the final layer as stated by StephenR .  I like the idea of the Alembic patch sewn on the the mask!

Just having fun, a marketing promo for the Mothership.

Indeed.
Last night the Lovely & Charming Mrs. Cowboy read me the best explanation of the principle I've heard:

"If everybody's naked, and a guy pees on your leg, you're going to get wet.  If you have pants on, some of it will get on you, but not all of it.  If he's wearing pants, too, you're fine."

Also had leftover "used" N95 masks from wildfire season plus one sealed one that I bought in Alaska last summer as we drove up to Fairbanks in a haze of intense wildfire smoke. When my wife and I went into a hardware store and asked if they had any N95 masks the guy behind the counter didn't even know what they were despite stocking them. Apparently we wear them during wildfire season here in CA but they just suffer through the summer haze up north.

Jazzyvee was the first to suggest adding an Alembic cloth mask over an N95 mask. Agree that any protection is better than none but as Bill points out the cloth masks protect others more than you. An Alembic branded cloth mask would be cool to wear over an N95 mask. The outlay of money to have custom fabric printed followed by the task of actually making enough cloth masks would probably make this an involved process. There is no way Alembic would market a cheesy looking logo mask, the quality of the silkscreen would have to be as good as the quality of the patches and logos on hats, but the idea is certainly a fun one.

Remember if you do wear any type of mask keep it in place over your nose and mouth and try not to touch the outside which may be contaminated. I see people walking around wearing them on their chins! More comfortable maybe but not terribly helpful.

Maybe an alembic mask should be provided with every new Alembic to prevent the owner drooling over the finish when opening the case for the first time.

We use what we can get; after some weeks wearing a bandanna (there being not a single mask of any flavor in these parts that I could find), the 100 disposable one I ordered on Amazon finally got here late last week.  And, I have a reusable cloth one on the way from the same place I get my Hawai'ian shits; can't wait see what patterns they used (plural because it's reversible).

A green Alembic logo on a black background .  There could even be matching  oversized bandanas .

How about a black Alembic logo on a Green background?  I've been Working from Home since March 19.  Boredom ensued, a couple weeks ago I made this....its not mask but I figured it would help with social distancing for most people.  Not YOU guys though  ;D
