Grateful Dead free weekly Shakedown Stream

Tonight is the third of the free weekly video streams the GD has been offering up during the COVID-19 outbreak. The first two installments were previously released concert films. This week features a 1993 show from Buckeye Lake that has never been shown. These stream on the Dead's youtube channel, Rolling Stone article about this weeks offering below.

Hey Harry, club mind meld...

I was glad to see they are going to dip into the vaults for some unreleased footage. Would be cool if they unearth some early stuff, by the 90s they had the video screens so there is probably a ton of archived video from the later years that was originally projected on the screens. Always appreciate seeing good quality footage from the 60s and 70s and have long wondered how much there is in the GD archives.

I'd have to say that is an awesome show from 1993, agreed it's wonderful to see some unreleased footage.  Jerry looked still clean and everyone is in top form!

My guess is there is probably a bunch of concert video in the vault (or spread around).  I remember there would be a camera mounted in the soundboard area, and a person using the name Voodoonola has posted black and white and color videos from 70s shows on YouTube in the past.

I think a lot of the B&W footage from the 70s originates from the Bill Graham archives, I believe he filmed every show he produced in B&W with no intent of it ever being commercially released. The stuff Voodoonala uploads replaces the mono camera sound feed with soundboard recordings that are in circulation, he does good work and the videos are fun to watch.

Looks like this weeks Friday Shakedown Stream is going to be the "Closing of Winterland". I have this on DVD and it is really good. Hoping future weeks will bring more previously unreleased material but it doesn't surprise me that, so far, this is mainly being used to promote existing product.

Watching "The Closing of Winterland" and I'm just blown away by the sound of the Godfather. Reminds me of the sounds I used to get from SCB (80-1504)

BTW, this was the first Dead concert I've ever seen aside from Dead and Co

I have this on DVD and watched it many times.  The look on Bobbys face during Sunshine Daydream when the explosion goes off is priceless!


They are doing a good thing releasing these for all to see and appreciate. This is important Read history.

just watching Phil lesh & friends Lock'n festival 2015 with Carlos Santana on guitar. Got it on surroundsound and Phils bass sounds great clear punchy and deep. His bass rig looks like it has the kind of Meyer cabs John Prock is keen for me to try.

Jazzy, Meyer cabs are a joy to play through if you like clean, clear sound but tend to weigh quite a bit and are staggeringly expensive. Fat bank account and road crew usually required but I am sure you would love the Meyer gear. Thankfully for us bass players in the Bay Area a lot of the venues have Meyer PAs so we get the benefit of the excellent bass sound without the expense.

The Beat Club footage is great. They showed it at one of the previous August GD "Meet Up at the Movies' events. Love the two keyboard version of the band and 72 was one of the high-water marks in the band's career. The Europe tour was also Pigpen's last big tour, last show he played would be in June of 72. I saw a few of the shows at the Academy of Music in NYC that directly preceded the Europe tour and those were the last times I saw Pig play, he was always a highlight and the chemistry of the band shifted quite a bit when he could no longer perform.
