Remembering Sam
« on: August 12, 2019, 10:50:16 AM »
I'm very sad to tell you all that Sam Field passed away on August 10. Sam was a dear and close friend of my family and Alembic, and was part owner of Alembic since the early 1970s.  Many of you will recall speaking with him in the 1970s and 1980s when he worked here. You may also be familiar with the film Sunshine Daydream, which he produced. His larger than life personality (and stature), booming voice, and sense of humor were his hallmarks. We are missing him very much, and our hearts go out to his brother, sisters, sons, and their families. There will never be another like Sam.

Sorry to hear about Sam's passing and the loss to the Alembic family and extended community. I never had the opportunity to speak with or meet Sam but Sunshine Daydream, IMO, is the best encapsulation of the Dead's music and scene that has been released to date. It would be a document to be treasured even if the performance by the band wasn't as amazing as it was that day. I love being reminded of how loose and family-like the scene was in the early days of the band.

Here is the "Bonus Features" part of the DVD.  It features comments about the event from a number of people involved in or attending the concert (including backstory on the creamery for whom the concert was a benefit); and among the people shown commenting are Sam Field and Ron Wickersham.
