Starting to be a month filled with the loss of more great musicians... Art Neville today, Bill Vitt last week. Somewhere in some far off place there are some amazing jam sessions going on among those who have left us.

I'm bummed about this one. The Meters were HUGE for me after college, and in the 90s it didn't seem likely that I would ever see them play. The past 5-10 years that I've started seeing live music again, I realized that George Porter Jr. was still playing a lot, and even that Zigaboo Modeliste lived in Oakland where I live! When I found out the Meters themselves (not the Funky Meters, etc.) were going to play at the Fillmore in San Francisco a few years ago I jumped on tickets right away. But it wasn't meant to be - Art Neville wasn't well enough to travel for the show, so it was cancelled.

I have since seen Zigaboo Modeliste & George Porter Jr. perform - even together - but that Meters show will never be. But the music will always be there - I will never give up my Meters CD collection that I've been building for over 20 years.

I was at a Neville Brothers show at The Fillmore in February of 1989 when someone proverbially yelled “fire” in the crowded theater.   The first band had finished and we were waiting for the Nevilles when it was announced that the building next door was on fire.  We were asked to calmly exit.  When we got outside, Geary Blvd. was closed, there were numerous fire engines, the flames were leaping hundreds of feet in the air, and the cops told us to “run”!  I remember standing across the street, watching the fire, and feeling bummed that I wouldn’t get to see the Brothers.  I did get to see them several times before and after.  GREAT band.

I had the great honor to do monitors for the Neville Brothers for three nights in (IIRC) '81.  Not only were they amazing shows, but the brothers - and especially Art & Charles - were great guys.  He will be missed.

RIP Art, Thanks fro sharing your music with us  :)

The Funky Meters blew my mind as a younger guy; I always will love those grooves.
