Had the Series 1 out this weekend...wow.
« on: May 30, 2019, 05:07:10 AM »
The series 1 I bought recently is an amazing sounding instrument.  Had a pickup gig with one of the groups of dead musicians I play with this past weekend and was almost going to leave it at home as my shoulder/arm is bothering me and I was going to bring a lightweight jazz instead.

Glad I endured the pain and discomfort.

Only a FB video unfortunately.  Wharf Rat at around the 35 to 40 minute mark really shows how impressive sounding these things can be.  Tones from growly to smooth/glassy and piano like all in line.  So glad I got this!

Please tell us that was a typo, and you were playing with Dead musicians and not dead ones; I mean, we all know Alembics are magic, but necromancy??  :o

Wow, a whole band of left handed musicians! What are the odds?

They really are fantastic things... I just had #77-621 at a studio practice session last night, rehearsing for a(nother) radio commercial clip we'll be tracking up in the next week or so. I've recorded up there before with T-I Jazz Rounds on my older Distillate with some really good results, but my old Series I is a snarling monster even with super-soft T-I Jazz Flats... it just cuts right through anything.

Sorry to hear about that pain and discomfort, Greg, but I hear ya'. Just this past week my medical team started me on a new anti-inflammatory medication that is supposed to target the osteoarthritis/spondylosis that seems to be accelerating through my upper spine and neck. (already got my first Titanium plate last year) The good news is, I think it's working... I felt pretty good after playing a couple hours last night, where the past few weeks have been pretty tough to deal with anything physical past 8 pm, whether I play or not. I was starting to get worried.

Anyway, of my Alembics, the old Series I is the most manageable both weight and balance-wise. I can envision a future though, where an Alembicized Starfire becomes my quickest go-to.

Glocke, the weight of series basses, well most alembics are no joke and as my gigs are usually 60 or 90 minutes max that's bearable. I have however started doing a few back stretches before and after my gigs to try to keep things in order. I've vowed never to sell one of my basses due to the weight. If it gets too heavy I will invest in, or make, one of these type of stage guitar stands.

Child and Cobra pose are where I go to prevent and alleviate some of that disc-crushing feeling.

I have shoulder problems too. I now take 2 ibprofun (spelling) an hour or so before a gig to help control it.

Mine are typically two hours, sometimes with a break sometimes no break.

Even the SCSD I have can become tiring..I remember one time we played what I think was a 2.5 hour gig with a 15-20 minute break, and the BL wanted to do encore after encore.  The weight of that bass was really getting to me at that point and I just walked off stage and let them do their thing. At this point it was already one in the morning so I didn't feel too bad about walking off...

Generally I'll stretch before playing, but the shoulder issues I have I think are largely due to getting too overzealous in the gym with weights.
