New tubes for my F2B
« on: June 06, 2017, 06:11:47 PM »
I've used a number of different types of tubes in my F2B over the years. Most recently, they've had 5751s for their clean and sturdy tone. I just got my McIntosh MC2015 rebuilt and the tech does a lot of tube amp stuff, hifi and instrument. I asked him about good tubes for the F2B, and he reached into his wall of tubes and pulled out a couple of white boxes. "Here, try these." "How much" "Happy birthday!" (It's not my birthday, but who am I to dispute). They are a pair of Amperex Bugle Boy tubes. I never really bought into the idea that some tubes have magic that others don't but these are really amazing. The level of clarity over previous tubes is instantly obvious. I'm a fan! And given the way they made tubes back then, they should last most of the rest of my life.

An unexpected gift. The best kind.

Nice to find what works; cool beans!  And that's a big 10-4 on tube life; when my son had me ship his Blues Jr to him in AK, he sent back a Silvertone 1484 Twin Twelve so i wouldn't be bereft of louditude.  It did not, alas, work, so I my neighbor hied it off to his repair guy - took a complete recapping, but the original Silvertone-branded tubes are still fine.

I did a test of tubes a while back, and posted my results:

Years ago I read that a guy has changed his Vacuum Tubes in his Hoover and it sounded great, but still sucked.
The only thing that stays the same is change.

Interesting that you weren't so into the Bugle Boys. I wonder if they are different than mine, given that they could have been made in a different factory, despite being the same brand.

It could just be we all hear differently.

They ones I have are vintage, and could of had who knows how much use before I got them. I just found two more Bugle Boys at the Goodwill outlet store from an old Ampex tape recorded and Hi Fi unit; a 12AU7 with an EF86, (the EF86 is used in Vox and Matchless amps as a preamp tube).
