I have just heard that Nicholas Sand passed away in his sleep at age 75 on April 24.
If the name isn't ringing any bells, it's because he avoided publicity as much as possible - but in 1967, along former Dead sound tech (and Owsley associate) Tim Scully, Mr. Sand created Orange Sunshine; he went on to make or co-make a goodly portion of the quality LSD consumed in North America over the next (at least) 30 years or so.
In all likelihood, he was an influence on a goodly number of us, whether we knew it or not.

My wife and I watched "The Sunshine Makers" (on Netflix) about a month ago. Great documentary and an excellent way to get a feel for what Nick and Tim Scully are about as people. Amazing that there is extant footage of them working in the lab. Some good footage of Millbrook, too, highly recommended. A week later we watched the "Orange Sunshine" movie. I wasn't sure if I was going to enjoy the movie, a lot of it is reenactments, but it sucked me in and is a good introduction to the Southern California surfer and hippie scene in the early 60s and of course the Brotherhood of Eternal Love.

It was against that backdrop that we learned of Nick's death two days after he he spoke at this year's psychedelic conference here in Oakland where we live. RIP... Nice piece about Nick's passing below.

He may have been responsible for my youth in deep cove BC if he was there in the '80's...regardless, I support his work and influence even if I haven't partaken in many years...
