Truss Rod
« on: March 21, 2017, 09:36:30 PM »
Was wondering something. I needed to loosen the truss rods on a new guitar. After how much time is the maximum effect on relief realized? 1 hour? 12 hrs? 24 hrs? Is it instantaneous?

In other words, how long do you typically wait before making any further adjustments if needed?

Curious to know what folks think.

The effect is pretty much instantaneous, but it may take a few hours to settle in.

I make the adjustments at once, but of course, then tune the strings to apply the right amount of tension, which the truss rod is there to counteract.

I typically just dial it in and be done with it. Temperature and humidity will make it move, so there might be a difference between tonight and tomorrow if you're having significant weather, but generally mine get tweaked once in the fall and once in the spring.

FWIW...I did the adjustment yesterday. Actually 1/2 turn...there was essentially no relief whatsoever. The change wasn't really instantaneous. Slight improvement immediately but more after waiting 24 hours. Gave another quarter turn today. Things are pretty much perfect now. My only concern is that the rods are just slightly more than finger tight. So if I need any more relief come summer, I won't be able to get it. Hoping it's also the matter of a new guitar neck settling in. Only time will tell, though I've had to send 2 back to Alembic for heat bends, with a third right on the border.
