Years ago I built a bi-amped system powered by two Dynaco 410 power amps a MLS tube pre amp, Dahlquist electrnic crossover,  Magnapan MK II speakers that i attached JVC ribbon tweeters with crossovers, a Thorens turntable with a linear tracking arm, and a RTR Rhombus subwoofer that had as I recall two passive 12" and a active down firing 15" woofer. That was one incredible system that did an incredible job at reproducing  any frequency that was recorded. That sub was smooth, but could knock pictures off the wall.  I don't remember the specs for that thing but it weighed probably 60 or 70 pounds and we used it as the coffee table in the room. I still have everything but the woofer in storage in my basement.  What memories. That takes my me back over 30 years. I had a 1979 Cutlass with a bi-amped system in it too. Back then that's what it took to get those kind of lows in your home or car. What is amazing is that now you can get systems that can surpass that incredible system and take up virtually no space in you home. There are many small subs out there that can reproduce those lows that you are looking for. A major part of achieving those lows is matching the sub to your room and having the power to smoothly reproduce the lows. Bass that low is omni directional so you can place the sub any where in the room. It adds a whole new dimension and presence to what you are listening to.

Yes, some of the new, smaller stuff can get the sounds of the lows - but to feel them, you need an old-school big-a** air column!  You want bass?  15s are a compromise........

The first college I went to, we had monthly "bops"; the Quality of Life Committee of the Student Govt would pop for 3 kegs & 1 gallon of Everclear (this for a student body totaling 175) & we'd put together a stereo from the various systems around campus - and we had a high percentage of rich young hippies (I, alas, met only 2 of those criteria).  At one point the basis of the bop system was a pair of Dahlquists sitting on a pair of Klipschhorns.  Yes, we boogied!
