78 Series I on Reverb

Something funky going on with the bridge of this bass. String spacing is messed up. Looks like either the string saddles were removed at some point and not put back properly, the bridge is on backwards or both. Then there is the extreme height that the bridge is set at so there may be additional issues with the neck, can't imagine anyone wanting the action to be that high. Otherwise it is a really nice looking bass. Considering that it appears to need work and doesn't come with the DS-5 or cord the price seems a bit ambitious.

I'd say the price was ambitious even if it was in great condition and came with the DS-5 and cord.

I think that's what happened. Either that, or it was set up for a left-handed Cro-Magnon to play.    Clearly, whoever cleaned that thing up and re-strung it didn't study very closely beforehand.

Agree that's a pretty bass, right up my alley. As for the pricing we've seen lately, have you guys also noticed an upward trend lately of the 'asking' prices of these 70's Series instruments? I wonder if it's a pile-on thing... somebody sees one priced a $4500, so they put $4700, the next guy tries for $5100, and so on. I doubt they are fetching that kinda' money yet. As always, I wish them the best of luck... I'll wait for another one. I'm told, there'll always be one.

I agree with Gregory that there does seem to be a situation of a bit of price creep with Series basses of this vintage. Part of that may be due to people never investigating whether a bass sold or was just taken off the market after no one bid on it.  The other thing I've noticed recently is more over priced Alembic basses showing up on sites like Reverb that are priced higher than one would expect. Sellers may be reacting to that too.  But as you stated Greg...there will always be another one that comes around.

Apparently it's not just Alembic Series I basses that are experiencing "price creep."  This F2B has been up before and in spite of the modifications it doesn't take much thought to understand why it hasn't sold yet.

That's not price creep, that's just absurd.

Apparently it's not just Series basses that are being overpriced. Just saw a 1988 Elan on eBay with "Stanley Clarke electronics" with an asking price of $6,000. Of course everyone is entitled to ask for whatever they want for their instrument, but there is currently a lot of stuff out there that has been hanging around for quite a while because of its pricing.

Very surprised to see the following 77 Series bass sell for $6,300. I am sure it is a nice instrument but there doesn't appear to be anything particularly special about it that would justify the price. Maybe people are so used to seeing the ridiculously inflated listings from Japan that they think this is a good deal?

That bass is/was one of the infamous Boogieman's offerings... I wouldn't be surprised to see it listed again.

Maybe this is the new norm.

Although this nice one is still sitting out there at a reasonable price ($3900, while most S1 basses have been selling for around $4000 - 4500 over the last year).  This one even has a "make an offer" option, so there may be a little room in that price.
