Building the big rig :-)
« on: May 30, 2016, 02:02:48 PM »
Still work in progress, but I hope to finish this rig this summer. Biggest bottleneck is the DS5R, the DS-6 is not expected anytime soon and the old units are not easy to find. (though I have a line out on one)
If anyone has a spare one plz feel free to contact me. :-)

Clean signal path goes to the Channel B input on MX400 and from there to channel 2 of the Bass 400
Distorted signal path goes to the Channel A input on the MX400 and from there to channel 1 on the Bass 400

The signal path that is not used can be blocked (muted) in the MX400, both signals can also be combined.
For preset switching on the MX400 I use a Midi Solutions Event processor plus, it translates a midi program change command and sends out two different program change commands on two different midi channels. Kind of lame “production flaw” on the MX400 the A/B channels can’t be changed separately on the same program change number…

The distorted signal path passes through the G-Arts midi effects switcher with a couple of Big Muff’s, Tech 21 XXL, Alesis Midiverb II, Ibanez HD1500 and a couple of Morley Wah pedals in its effects loops. I think I will also insert the tuner in one of its loops, it is currently connected to the tuner out of the wireless receiver. (so won’t work when I play wired)
Each effect can be switched in or out of the chain and two groups of 4 effects can be reversed. (Effects block A – B or B – A)

In my previous setup the clean signal path also passed through the Midi switcher (which also has two switchable outputs)
With this new setup that signal path avoids the noisy midi switcher and I can still add some effects with the MX400.

The modified Alembic DS5-R will make this rig extremely versatile and easy to use.
The modifications are: Add a ¼ Jack input on the front and back, only the mono output will be used in this setup.
The wireless system is “permanently” connected to the back input and the front 5-pin + ¼ front input can be used for practice/emergency (when wireless fails)
All inputs can also be used simultaneously if we ever want to do a ‘tallica version of Big Bottom :-)

The first pics shows the basic signal paths, this signal is continued from the bass 400 slave out into the Strategy 400 mono input.
Bass 400 drives two 1x15 cabs, Strategy 400 drives two 2x10 cabs.
Typically I would have one 1x15 and 2x10 stack on each side of the drum riser, one of the 2x10 cabs has an ampclamp (mic holder) attached.
Not sure yet where I will place the DI, I think best would be between the channel B out of the MX400 and input 2 of the Mesa.
DI will only have clean sounds and the distorted sounds (which sound awful DI-ed) will be picked up only by the 2x10 mike.

Hey Flip

When I get my first squillion dollars I will give you the job
of building a big rig for me ;)

Is there a Metallica bass sound that you cannot get?

Thanx guys! :-)

I can get very close to almost all sounds now :-)
To nail the '89 Jason sounds I'll need a Sansamp Classic, but the big Muff works well also.
Later on he used a Mesa Triaxis for the overdriven sounds (early 90's), that's one bridge too far for me :-) (luckily the big muff also works well for those sounds)

I've been struggling with this one: I'm pretty sure Cliff used the Alembic on that one, amp is Mesa D-180, Delay/harmonics is HD1500, but I'm not sure on the overdrive/distortion.
It's been suggested that it could be a Tube Screamer, but I've tried one and it doesn't come close. The Big muff comes much closer, but does sound quite different...
So I guess he must have used an other pedal at some point, haven't found info/pics of that one yet...

To me, it looks as if you don't have quite enough Mesa kit Flip.  I have an M9 carbine I'll be trying to move on shortly if you're interested :-)

Seriously though, that's one hell of a rig. Would scare most guitarists into submission too.

Hey, Flip, why do you use two different whas and could you explain what are the differences between them and the two Muffs? I imagine that you use two for tonal differeneces, but as is so hard to find and even more to try any gear here in Brazil, I'd like to know how they sound like and your impressions about them...

I use the PWF mostly for the Cliff sounds, though Jason also used one when he joined Metallica till about '92. It reacts completely different compared to the modern ones when used like Cliff did (Morley -> Big Muff)
The newer ones sound a bit "smoother" and are perfect for the Jason sounds (Big Muff -> Morley) but don't work well in the Cliff setup.

The PWF has a wider range (much larger sweep) The fuzz reminds me of that classic Jimmie sound (not very useful for me, but our lead guitar player had a blast with it) :-)

The Big Muffs are pretty much the same, I use the big one with the PWF and the little one with the Classic wah. Only difference in settings are the output levels.
I'm going to try some old ones asap, but expect them to sound roughly the same also (at least in this setup)

-Blush-  :)

Slight change of plans: I'm thinking of having the PS modded with 3 outputs so I won't need the Lehle splitter:

And I bought a G-lab MGC-6 to replace the G-Arts switcher, it can also send out 3 different program change numbers in each preset so the Midi Solutions Event processor plus is no longer needed.  :D

And another change of plans :-)

With the Metallica tribute band we've gone all in ear... (!)
We bought a Presonus RM32 digital rackmixer, now we can provide a FOH mix and we have total control over our (stereo) in ear mix. (each musician can make his own mix with a laptop/Ipad/Iphone)
I'll gather some pictures and will start a new topic on this system next year, awesome stuff!

So I removed the Strategy and 2x10 cabs from this setup, the rest stays the same.
The Strategy is now in my new "stereo" rig which I use with the Series I bass in my other band.
Currently I run from the Power supply into a Digitech Studio quad effects processor (4 in one) so I can have different effect settings for each pickup.
Each pickup of the Series I has its own cannel on the Strategy and its own 2x10 cab, the signal of the fretless comes through both channels.

This system needs a F-2B, so I will add it asap :-)
I only use chorus for some fretless sounds and on the bridge pickup of the SI in a couple of songs, so I think I will get a nice pedal to replace the Digitech.
That's going to be a nice setup :-)
