I saw Phil Lesh play last night. For one portion of the set he brought out his old Alembicized Guild bass. he hit some amazing low notes and feedback that made the concrete floor in the basketball arena, along with your body, vibrate. Awesome.

Question though -- I had always known this guild bass to be called the Godfather. yet when I go to some phil sites people are notating it as big brown.

Is this the same bass? He was clearly not playing the Osage Orange model -- it was definitely the guild with the aleembic headstock, 30 knobs and the stealie sticker where his right arm would be. Anyone know why there is a name discrepency here?

i gueess Phil has renamed it Big Brown?

Well, it will always be the Godfather to me. Nice to see that thing out for a song. It sounded awesome!!!!!

My guitard is going to the Phil show in Albany, NY...I've made him promise a Godfather report if it gets used.
Never heard of that bass being called Big Brown.
