Well, I bit the bullet:

I bought 2 Bag End cabinets. S15D and S15X-D.

Should be picking them up Monday.

Keavin, I hope you steered me right.

let me know what you decide on to power them. I've got 2 S15D's headed my way as well. My bass is packed in a shipping container and I probably won't lay hands on it until October (I think a cheap fill in purchase is in my future). Once I get my bass back I'll be shopping for something to power the cabs and I'll be interested in your findings.

EDIT: Nevermind- I just re-read the thread and saw your power amp choice. I'd still be interested in your findings when you get the cabs though.

Out of curiousity has anyone use a pa sub woofer on a bass rig?
is it a good idea. Not for volume as such but just for the meat!

I've used a Bose PA with subwoofer to supplement my rig - how truly excellent the bottom end is. Reminds me of listening to my stereo with Altec speakers really loud in about 1975.

I don't see any reason a PA sub wouldn't work. A sub designed for live music should be able to handle the low end while being driven from a bass rig. It will probably even perform better in this mode since it is only handling one instrument. My Bag End 18's have been used for PA as well as my bass rig and I've seen them used for movie theatres. Also keep in mind when playing a large venue it is not the bass rig but the PA handling the sound reproduction. If PA subs couldn't handle it we'd all have to have John Entwistle size rigs. :-)

Back in the 70's I had a rig consisting of an Ampeg V4B head, into an Ampeg V6 2x15 cabinet and Peavey sound reinforcement cabinet. The Peavey had a Cerwin-Vega 18 in it. That was a rig that you hear, feel and see in action! Nothing like watching your bell-bottoms flapping in the breeze of an 18! LOL!

Hey you cant go wrong with the Bag end 15's cabs,Ive Rattled/broken the shit outta some very Fine China & several dishes with my rig & had several Visits from the Police as a result!......that's when you know you got power!

I'm wondering how well they'll work when I add a couple of ELF subs.

But I suspect they are going to sound mighty fine indeed.

Final signal chain: Epic 4 fretless (I will receive my Series II one day!) - SF2 - QSC PLX 3402 - S15D + S15XD

Should be a nice little rig.

They are 8 Ohm cabs; I'm thinking of running them in stereo. Since the 3402 puts out 700 watts per side into 8 Ohms, what can I do to protect the speakers from meltdown?

Just leave the volume down on the power amp. I run my two D10B cabinets off of one side for a 2 ohm load. This results in the PLX3002 being capable of 1500W into an 800W speaker load. I just leave PLX3002 gain about half way and have never had any problems and have plenty of volume. For the ELF side the amp puts out 900W at 4 ohms, a perfect match, so I leave the gain up full.

I use two rigs, both based around the F-1X, but with diff. power amps, and diff. outboard parametric EQs.

In the first rig, I use a 3 way cab with a passive crossover, 1 X 12, 1 X 6 and a peerless horn tweeter. ( they are rare but I bought a few, v sweet sounding , much better than the fostex horns)
My sub is a 2 X 12 , precision devices drivers.
I use the crossover from the F-1X and set it around 125 hz.My F-1X EQ is 2- 10 - 2. I have the paraemetric EQ for filtering the low end by setting the hi pass between 30 - 50 hz at a 6 db slope, as some stages are 'boomy' sounding. I don't really use the rest of the EQ very much. This rig was designed by myself and I am happiest with this having gone through likle many others, all the typical commercial cabs out there.

For the second rig, I use a piar of 1 X 12s, but am building presently a BFD OMNI15.

I took the new rig to a youth conference. 500+ people in a building rated for about 350- props to Bag End for totally carrying the bottom end, even when the PA couldn't keep up.

I have to say that I'm feeling pretty good about the choice right now.

You'd have a hard time going wrong with Bag End and QSC.
